Winery appeal loses most of its juice

By JOAN DEMIRJIAN

A case involving a winery in Auburn was the subject of a court decision last week as Geauga County Common Pleas Court Judge David Fuhry upheld a majority of the township's findings regarding the operation.

Jay and Elizabeth Schabel had appealed the Auburn zoning inspector's determination that a crush pad, pavilion and bridge are not agricultural and are not exempt from township zoning.

The Auburn board of zoning appeals' also had denied variances for the crush pad, pavilion and side-yard setback of the bridge.

The Schabel property is approximately 63 acres, where they operate a winery in a building attached by a wing to their residence. Grapes for the wine primarily are grown on the property.

Solon Recreation Director Donald W. Holub said Monday that he welcomes the challenge of supervising Grantwood Golf Course.

Mr. Holub, who has served as the recreation director for 21 years, began his additional role March 1.

Mayor Susan A. Drucker said recently that she was placing the city-owned course temporarily under his direction. Longtime Grantwood Director Gary Mazzeo is retiring next month.

Fire destroys Claridon house

By JOSEPH KOZIOL JR.

A Claridon Township family was left homeless last week after a fire that went undetected for hours destroyed their Forest Road home.

Burton Fire Chief Michael Sestak said Monday the walls and roof of the home collapsed before firefighters arrived shortly after 9:30 a.m. Feb. 25.

He said firefighters responded to the blaze within four minutes, but the fire apparently burned for hours before a telephone call was made.

Chardon Fire Chief Larry Gaspar, whose department also was called to the scene, said firefighters only could take a defensive attack on the structure by pouring water from the outside.

Hawken girls win 12th staright swim title

By STEVE NOVAK

When one of the swimmers from this year's Hawken girls team was asked if there was pressure at the 2010 state meet because of the school's string of 11 straight state titles, her answer showed equal amounts of poise and confidence.

"We like to look at the accomplishments of each individual year, not at the history of the past wins," Hawken's Carrie Bencic said. "We're extremely proud of what we've done."

Scouting memories abound for 100 years

By JOAN DEMIRJIAN

Scouting in Chagrin Falls not only introduced resident Ray Henderson to new experiences and friends, but to many aspects of his hometown.

"My father died when I was 14 years old," Mr. Henderson said. "We were living on Cottage Street. My brothers, Eldon and Herb, had gone to the service."

As it turned out, Scouting was a big help, he said, as the organization celebrates its 100th anniversary this year. He joined Troop 182, sponsored by the Chagrin Kiwanis Club, while in the sixth grade, and his adult Scoutmasters would help fill the void in his life, he said.

He went to his first meeting with John "Barkey" Rodgers, now Dr. John Rodgers, and it was the start of many great adventures while a Scout, Mr. Henderson said.
