Berets, cafes enliven ‘Gertie’s’

It’s Saturday night and the Valley Art Center has traveled back in time and place to Paris in the 1920s and ‘30s where artists and writers are gathered in the salon of their patron, mentor and confidant, Gertrude B. Stein.
“Party at Gertie’s,” the theme of this year’s VAC benefit, drew a wall-to-wall crowd of art lovers, VAC members and merrymakers.

New plan for horse crossing: Leave as is

Flashers were taken out of the equation last month in discussions regarding improvements to the horse crossing at SOM Center Road and Hawthorn Parkway. Instead, combining the two crossings to one location was recommended by City Council’s safety and public properties committee.
Now it appears that no changes will be made after all.

Turnabout’s fair play as man receives help with house rehab

Burton Village residents and a Kirtland church chose to give back this month to a village man who has given so much to the community.
Volunteers from Spring Street and Kirtland Christian Fellowship have spent their weekends putting a fresh face on a 150-year-old home at 13740 Spring St., where resident Jerry Welch lives.

Wolverines aligned, set on finishing

Starting off 5-0 the past two seasons, West Geauga football has had no problem getting out of the gates.
But after losses and missed red-zone opportunities piled up at the end of last season, finishing became a new motto for the 2012 Wolverines, said Lou Cirino, who is 14-7 in two seasons as head coach.
Cirino has yet to beat Chagrin Valley Conference foes Chagrin Falls, Aurora and Kenston, which all are opponents in the second half of West Geauga's schedule.

Special theater camp proves ‘life-changing’

When a camp gets accolades like “My favorite things are friends and singing our hearts out,” said Ronit Peerless, or “Stagecrafters Camp is so wonderful for me. I love this place,” said Alex Simon, somebody is doing something right.
In this case, Orange Stagecrafters Broadway Buddies is that somebody. The adaptive theater program provides musical, dance and performance opportunities for teenagers and young adults with special needs.
