Berkshire district loses another treasurer
By JOSEPH KOZIOL JR.
At the end of last school year, the Berkshire School District was in the market for a new treasurer. Now, history is repeating itself.
District Treasurer Karen Andrei announced Monday that she will be stepping down from her position to accept a job with the Shaker Heights School District. She served the Berkshire district for one year.
Board President Valerie Timmons and board member John Manfredi each expressed regret while making the motion to accept her resignation.
Although Mrs. Timmons said Ms. Andrei's leaving will be a loss for the district, she said she also understands that she is being presented with a "great opportunity" to work in a larger school district.
School Superintendent Douglas DeLong said it was a pleasure to have worked with Ms. Andrei, and the district surely will miss her.
Board member Roger Miller said Ms. Andrei brought some innovative approaches to working with the school's finances, noting that she made changes in some of the ways the school had conducted its finances for decades.
"She paid for herself a number of times," he said.
Mr. Miller said it is easier to part ways knowing that she had done so much good for the district.
Ms. Andrei, who made her resignation effective July 31, promised to remain with the district on an as-needed basis from Aug. 1 through Sept. 30 to assist with finances and aid with the transition.
"I'll be here Saturdays, Sundays, evenings, whatever is needed," she said. "I won't leave you in the lurch."
Ms. Andrei praised the school's staff, saying it made her job much easier. She said she knows that the district will be in good hands because of that staff.
And, she said, it will not be difficult for the incoming treasurer. "Things are in good shape for the upcoming school year," she said.
Last year, school Treasurer Merry Lou Tramont stepped down after serving the district for two years in a cost-sharing arrangement with the Cardinal School District. Mrs. Tramont stepped down after an increased workload in the Cardinal district.
The district then went back to a full-time treasurer position with Ms. Andrei.
Mrs. Timmons said the district will begin the search for a new treasurer.
