Councilman launches write-in campaign for mayor
By SUE REID
Solon Councilman John T. Scott announced this week that he is running as a write-in candidate for mayor.
"We'll give it one more shot," Mr. Scott, a 14-year councilman, said of his third attempt at Solon's top office. "The third time is a charm."
Mr. Scott, who is in his fourth four-year term on council, will run against Councilwoman Susan A. Drucker and former Mayor Robert A. Paulson. Although there are three candidates, there will be no primary due to the write-in status.
A 33-year Solon resident, Mr. Scott ran twice before for mayor, losing in the last general election to Mayor Kevin C. Patton. He did not make it to the 2001 general election, losing to Richard A.F. Mendelsohn and Mr. Patton in the primary.
"What motivated me to run was the ground swell of requests from people who said they didn't have the choice for mayor," Mr. Scott said. "They made me start thinking about it and pushed me into doing it," he said.
"I had said before I wasn't going to run, because I didn't have a reason to run," he said. "I thought Kevin was doing a good job," he said of Mr. Patton, who is not running for re-election.
Mr. Scott said his only point of contention is with new business development, "and I think the administration did a great job of trying to bring the Coral project to Solon."
