Pettibone Road phases overlap for progress
By SUE REID
Simultaneous phasing is under way in the Pettibone Road reconstruction project.
"They're making good progress, and the weather has been cooperative," Solon Public Works Director James S. Stanek said of Kenmore Construction, of Akron, the general contractor.
In phase one, which is between Liberty and Aurora (Route 43) roads, installation work on sidewalks and driveway aprons is continuing, and the new traffic signal on Aurora Road is being installed. Also, for safety purposes, a fence is being installed by a culvert near the east corporation line, Mr. Stanek said.
Weather permitting, the final layer of asphalt is expected to be installed in phase one next week, city Engineer John J. Busch said.
In phase two, the contractor is still working on a waterline and storm sewer, Mr. Stanek said. In addition, mail delivery has been changed for residents on the south side of the road and has been moved to a gang box on Witchhazel Lane, which is in the Preserve subdivision.
Traffic remains one-way eastbound only on the road.
In phase three, work is being done on the replacement of the gas line, which has resulted in minor traffic disruption. Also, the trees are being marked for clearing, Mr. Busch said.
Fire Chief William J. Shaw said his department has not seen any problems to date with regards to response time. "It's working pretty well," he said.
Mr. Shaw had put a directive in place upon the beginning of the simultaneous phasing which dictated that a unit would remain at Fire Station No. 3 at all times for non-emergency functions, to ensure that response time would not be effected. Fire Station No. 3 responds to the southern portion of the city, including along Pettibone Road.
"We have made some adjustments in the training for the firefighters in place at Station 3," Mr. Shaw said, "but we're still able to accomplish the training and still have units available for response."
Fire Station No. 3 is on the corner of SOM Center (Route 91) and Pettibone roads.
