Comets shoot to fourth straight victory
By STEVE NOVAK
After having defeated Mentor for this first time in four years earlier this season, undefeated Solon carried the momentum into week four with a resounding 42-6 defeat of Parma last Thursday night. It was the first meeting of the schools and the 30th victory at Stewart Field since 2003.
Senior quarterback Jake Voigt completed 9 of 11 passes for 242 yards and three touchdown. In the four games of the season, Voigt has completed 51 of 82 pass attempts for 831 yards.
Running back Kyle Hammonds collected two more touchdowns on his way to grinding out 76 yards on the ground. Hammonds has scored seven touchdowns this season.
Coach Jim McQuaide said Voigt's direction of the offense led to a dominant second-half performance as the Comets gained more than 400 offensive yards in the contest.
"Jake had a real good game. He's in charge," McQuaide said. "We go as Jake goes. We were able to do what we wanted to, after our first series of downs in the third quarter."
At this point in the season last year, Solon had a record of 2-2, with losses to Mentor and Mayfield. McQuaide said that the attitude of this year's team has been altered with the 4-0 mark they now enjoy.
"They're definitely pleased that we've been able to do what we've been trying to do," he said. "But now we're getting into the meat of our schedule, where we're facing more tough teams."
The Comets face unbeaten Hudson at Dante Lavellie Field at 7:30 p.m. Friday. Hudson has not beaten the Comets since 2004.
"Ever since the beginning of the year, we thought that Hudson would be one of the toughest teams," he said. "They're 4-0. Their quarterback is outstanding, and they run the ball well."
McQuaide has said the undefeated record is rewarding, but it means very little unless the Comets keep on winning. Last year was the first time in a decade that Solon didn't qualify for the playoffs.
