Solon faces Mayfield in battle of unbeatens

By STEVE NOVAK

Playing undefeated teams is nothing new for Solon and this Friday the Comets entertain Mayfield in a homecoming battle of 5-0 teams in a Northeast Ohio Conference clash at 7:30 p.m. at Stewart Field.

The game will go a long way toward the computer rankings, with Mayfield ranked second and Solon fourth. Solon coach Jim McQuaide said he expects a very tough game against the Wildcats, who shut out the Comets 6-0 last season.

"They're 5-0. They have three shutouts this year," McQuaide said. "We have nothing but respect for them. They shut us out last year (6-0). We have to go up against them and prove that we can compete against them."

Mayfield has held three of opponents, Bedford, Elyria and Brush, scoreless. The Wildcats have allowed an averaged of five points per game.

The game will be televised on a tape-delayed basis by Time Warner Cable.

Last week, the Comets handed host Hudson its first loss of the season, 28-14, at Lavelli Field.

McQuaide said that he and his team felt Hudson was going to be one of the toughest teams on the schedule. The Explorers came into the game undefeated and averaging nearly 30 points per game.

Solon took the lead on the first touchdown of the game in the second period when quarterback Jake Voigt scored on a 1-yard plunge. Later in the quarter, Voigt threw a touchdown pass to tailback Juan Lemus. The Comets held a 14-7 lead at halftime.

Hudson tied the score at 14-14 in the third quarter on a quarterback keeper.

With a little bit more than six minutes left in the game, Voigt connected on a 47-yard touchdown pass to Darryl Baldwin, the Ohio State recruit. The touchdown capped a drive that began at the Comets' 8-yard line after an interception by A.J. Hicks.

Solon put away the game on a 15-yard run by tailback Kyle Hammonds.

Voigt completed 13 of 19 passes for 185 yards. He also rushed for 37 yards. The Comets have gained more than 1,000 yards through the air this season.
