DAVID HUGH HANNA
David Hugh Hanna ("Hugh"), international retail marketing executive for the oil and gas industry, died Friday, September 25, 2009. He was 81 years old. Hugh dedicated his life to his two passions: His work and his family.
Hugh began his career with Ashland Oil Co. in Ashland, Kentucky in 1951. A year later, he began his 40+ year career with The Standard Oil Company of Ohio (Sohio) in the marketing department. He held several management positions in all areas of the company's retail marketing divisions throughout Ohio and Michigan. Most notably, Hugh established the Boron Oil Company in Michigan. He later returned to Sohio headquarters in Cleveland where he became Vice President of Marketing and later Senior Vice President of Sales and Marketing.
After the acquisition of Sohio by British Petroleum (B.P.), Hugh was elected Senior Vice President of Marketing worldwide where he was responsible for over 1,800 retail stores in the U.S. and over 3,000 worldwide. While in London, Hugh also introduced convenience stores to European markets as well as American truck stops.
After his retirement from B.P. he served as President and CEO of Atlas Supply Co. in Atlanta, Georgia. Up until his death, he was active as a consultant and board member to several energy companies.
Hugh was born in Evanston, Illinois in 1928 and grew up in Canton, Ohio. He attended Howe Military Academy and University School as a boarder. He earned his Bachelor's Degree from Denison University and completed his graduate work at Harvard University. He was a veteran of World War II.
Hugh is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Judy Neiswander; and two children, Mark Hanna (Colleen) and Katherine (Brent Classen). He is the grandfather of David, Drew, K.K., Scott, Bradley, Michael, Elizabeth, and Sarah.
A memorial service and reception will be held at 4:30pm on Thursday, October 1, 2009, at The Country Club, 2825 Lander Rd in Pepper Pike.
