Perfect season intact for Wolves, Tigers, Hawks
By STEVE NOVAK
Three teams in the Chagrin Valley Conference -- West Geauga, Chagrin Falls and Hawken -- remain undefeated through the sixth week of the season
West Geauga 28
Aurora 10
West Geauga stayed perfect last Friday night with a 28-10 defeat of 2008 state champion Aurora.
Wolverines' coach Dave Bors said the game provided a showcase for good performances by his quarterback, along with his triple-option offense, which he calls "the three-headed monster."
"Our quarterback, Joe Drenski, played well and made some good decisions out there," Bors said. "Our three-headed monster of running backs, Kevin Sonnie, Andy Powers and Anthony Catalioto, all did a good job, too."
Drenski was the top rusher with 115 yards in 14 carries, while Sonnie picked up 103 yards in only five rushing attempts.
The West Geauga defensive unit held the Greenmen to only 73 rushing yards.
After taking a 14-10 lead at halftime, West Geauga kept last year's Division III state champ out of the end zone for the rest of the game.
West Geauga finished the contest with 348 yards rushing.
"We shut down their rushing. We knew that's what we had to do to stop them," Bors said. "Then we started to control the ball. Everybody did their part. There was no one player -- just all of them."
West Geauga hosts Orange Friday night, with an eye toward Chagrin Falls on Oct. 16.
Chagrin Falls 23
Wickliffe 7
Wickliffe was the sixth victim for Chagrin Falls in a 23-7 game.
The story of the game could in part be summarized by comparing the rushing game of both teams. Chagrin Falls rushed for 228 yards, while the Tigers' defense held the Blue Devils to only 76 yards on the ground.
Chagrin Falls jumped out to a 7-0 lead in the opening period when quarterback Chris Trinetti put a 10-yard touchdown pass into the hands of Connor Clegg.
The score jumped to 14-0 in the second period when tailback Chris Gorman scored on a 1-yard plunge. Gorman scored on another 1-yard run in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers defense held Wickliffe scoreless until the fourth quarter.
The Tigers' Bobby Winkelman picked up rushing honors with 112 yards in 16 carries, while Gorman added 95 yards in 20 carries.
Gorman also put three more points on the board with his three point-after-touchdown kicks.
The Tigers host Painesville Harvey Friday night.
Hawken School 54
Richmond Heights 0
Hawken School posted a 54-0 victory over Richmond Heights.
Coach Cliff Walton's Hawks rolled up a lead of 47-0 by the end of the first half. They finished the game with 378 yards of total offense.
Three of the key members of the wing-T offense scored two touchdowns apiece. Seniors John Wilson and Jake Willen, along with sophomore Jeremy Simmons all had a pair of touchdowns. Willen was the top individual rusher with 91 yards, while Simmons had 88 yards.
In addition to posting their best season record to date in a decade, the Hawks are showing an offense that is to be reckoned with. The Hawks are averaging 43 points per game.
The Hawks allowed Richmond Heights less than 100 yards of total offense.
Hawken senior quarterback Zach McMains only had to throw five times and completed four. Wilson was the recipient of two of the four tosses.
Hawken travels to Independence Friday night.
Kenston 21
Orange 0
Kenston picked up its fourth win the season when the Bombers threw a shutout Orange last Friday.
Running back Pat Porter ran for all three the touchdowns. The longest was an 80-yard run from scrimmage on the team's opening possession in the first quarter. Porter also accounted for the team's other three points on point-after-touchdown kicks.
The 6-foot, 200-pound Porter finished the game with 177 yards in 17 carries. Tailback Jim Tomcufcik added another 45 rushing yards.
Kenston coach Roger Vasey said linebackers Pat Behm and Jim Romanowski each recorded 19 tackles in the game. Vasey said the linebackers' efforts came in handy in stopping the Orange offense.
"They (Behm and Romanowski) are really coming along. We're making a lot of progress defensively," Vasey said. "We're very pleased with the four wins, but we have to continue to evolve offensively."
Orange coach Adam Bechlam said three starters were removed from the Kenston game in the first quarter due to injuries, causing a lot of quick re-arranging.
"We lost three players in the first eight minutes. So we had to figure out our identity in a hurry," he said. "At halftime, we made some adjustments. We outplayed them in the second half, but it's tough to come back when you're trailing 21-0."
Josh Rogers was Orange's top rusher with 44 yards. Quarterback Ryan Bitzer completed six of 11 passes.
Kenston travels to Perry Friday night.
Orange (1-5) visits West Geauga Friday night.
