Comets win battle of unbeatens with Mayfield

Solon's football team seems to be falling into a pattern. Often this year, the undefeated Comets have played a team which also was undefeated. And in the end, the Comets have walked away without a blemish.
That was the case again last Friday night in a Northeast Ohio Conference showdown against previously undefeated Mayfield. Computer points, bragging rights and conference standings were all on the line at Stewart Field.
When the contest ended three hours later, Solon had a 27-20 victory for its sixth consecutive triumph and a bundle of computer points.
"They're a good team," Solon coach Jim McQuaide said. "There's a reason they were 5-0,. All week long, we thought it would be a close game. Every time we let up, you could see them coming back."
Solon got on the board first with a touchdown pass from Jake Voigt to Tres Barksdale and held a 13-0 lead at halftime.
Both teams added seven points to their total in the third quarter, but a determined Mayfield team fought back with two touchdown passes in the final quarter. McQuaide said his defensive lineman deserved a big share of the credit for the team's victory.
"Our upfront guys on the line are the guys responsible for holding them back," McQuaide said. "They made some big sacks at the end, and that's one of the reasons we came out with the win."
Solon's touchdowns in the second half came from a 6-yard run by Kyle Hammonds and then a 74-yard reception by Hammonds.
Voigt completed 14 of 23 passes for 192 yards. He already has passed for nearly 1,400 yards this season. Hammonds gained 130 yards in 29 carries.
McQuaide said it was essential to have the team's running and passing game running in tandem against Mayfield.
"We were able to run and to get the ball to our receivers, and that's what made us successful," McQuaide said.
Solon hosts Brunswick (5-1) Friday night at 7:30 p.m.
"It doesn't get any easier for us," McQuaide said. "They are a very good team. They beat us the last two years in a row."
The teams have playedf four times, but the Comets have to go back to 1967 for the last time they beat Brunswick.
