Comets post seventh straight victory
By STEVE NOVAK
The beat goes on for Solon as the Comets posted their seventh straight win of the season, a 17-7 decision over visiting Brunswick last Friday night.
The victory featured a first half which clearly indicated that both teams were not playing at their best. Comets' coach Jim McQuaide said his team simply made many mistakes early in the contest.
"We made a ton of mistakes and we had lots of penalties in the first half," he said. "You have to credit Brunswick for that. Some teams can just force you to do things that you don't want to do."
Solon scored first on a 25-yard run by halfback Kyle Hammonds. Brunswick tied the game in the second quarter.
McQuaide said one of the differences was how his defense was able to react much more effectively later in the game.
"Our defense played a lot better in the second half," he said. "They have some guys who are very fast, and they use a ton of motion and misdirection in their plays. We were able to react to that better as the game went on."
The Comets put another three points on the board early in the third quarter with a 30-yard field goal by Kevin Hicks. Later in the same period, senior quarterback Jake Voigt connected on a 21-yard touchdown pass to tight end Ryan Rosenberg.
The drive which led to Rosenberg 's touchdown included Solon declining to kick on a fourth down and six yards to go. Instead, Voigt faded back and connected with Juan Lemus on a pass that got the first down and kept the drive going.
Solon travels to Nordonia (2-5) Friday night to take on an old foe from a previous conference.
"We used to have a great rivalry with Nordonia," McQuaide said. "It was an old, intense rivalry. Now we get to play them and get it started up again."
