By STEVE NOVAK
After three weeks of nonconeferncefootball games, Chagrin Valley Conference action begins this weekend. West Geauga visits Chagrin Falls, Orange travels to Wickliffe, Kenston heads to Beachwood and Hawken hosts Berkshire. In a nonconference contest, University School visits Willoughby South.
West Geauga visits C.S. Harris Stadium to face the Tigers. Last week, West Geauga defeated Brush, 21-7, while Chagrin Falls defeated host Berkshire, 24-0.
The Wolverines had over 300 total yards of offense and held the Arcs to less than 100 yards on offense.
"We're just trying to stay consistent," West Geauga coach Dave Bors said.
Bors said his defensive team is showing much improvement. He cited the play of defensive lineman T.J. Kelly, who scored two touchdowns on fumble recoveries against Painesville Riverside.
Jeff Corbo scored on a three-yard run, Kevin Sonnie caught a 19-yard touchdown pass from Louie Link and Tom Kelley grabbed a 13-yard score from Link.
Link was 10 of 16 with 120 yards passing. Corbo rushed for 63 yards on 13 carries. Anthony Catalioto added 52 yards on five rushes, Brett Williams 44 yards on 10 carries and Link 42 yards on nine tries. Catalioto also caught three passes for 43 yards and Kelly grabbed three passes for 32 yards.
In Chagrin's win, the offense was led by the rushing of Chris Gorman with 108 yards and the passing of Chris Trinetti, who was six out of 15 for 99 yards.
Last year, the Tigers defeated the Wolverines, 39-19.
Coach Nick Gerhard's Orange Lions got their second win in three outings, defeating visiting Ashtabula Edgewood, 34-26. Gerhard said his team chalked up more than 350 yards of offense, but he was also happy about the team's balance and composure.
"We just have to work on our consistency," he said. "We shut them (Edgewood) down at times, and then we let them back in."
The Lions visit Wickliffe (0-3) Friday, a team Gerhard said has a "much improved defensive team" this season.
Kenston (0-3) looks for its first win of the season at Beachwood (2-1) Saturday.
The Bombers dropped their third game in a row last week, falling to visiting Nordonia, 38-3.
Gilmour (2-1) got back on the winning track last Friday when the Lancers came from behind to beat host Hawken, 16-7.
This week, Gilmour hosts to Cleveland Central Catholic Friday, which is undefeated in its first three contests. Last season, Gilmour defeated Cleveland Central Catholic, 40-16.
"We've played Cleveland Central Catholic before. They seem to be getting better and better," Gilmour coach Bob Spicer said. "They've got lots of kids this year. They're very physical and they've got good speed. They're a much improved team."
Against Hawken, Spicer said he was especially proud of the performance of running back Ryan Teknipp, who gained 141 yards in 20 carries.
"He clearly was the difference maker," Spicer said. "That, and our defense."
Hawken, which dropped to 0-3, entertains Berkshire (2-1).
Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin got the better of University School, 21-13.
Once again, NDCL quarterback John Fioritto was the key of the team's offense. He ran for 110 yards and completed eight passes for 94 yards. Tailback Ryan Sarkasian ran for 109 yards in 20 carries. Fioritto scored two touchdowns and Sarkasian scored the other one.
For University School, Dan Frate divided his time between running back and quarterback. He rushed for 101 yards and threw for 156 yards, including two touchdown passes.
NDCL (2-1) has an nonferenece matchup this week with New Albany, a Franklin County team which was 7-3 last season. New Albany was also the only team last season to defeat Division III state champion Big Walnut, of Sunbury, New Albany defeated Big Walnut during the regular season.
Coach Byron Morgan said the New Albandy team "has very good skill players and they have a little different set, working out of the wing-T offense."
University School (1-2) visits Willoughby South (1-2) Friday.
