Comets move closer playoff berth
By STEVE NOVAK
The undefeated string went to No. 8 for Solon as the Comets stayed perfect for the season with a 42-7 defeat of Nordonia last Friday night in a Northeast Ohio Conference game.
The Comets are on their way to making amends for a 6-4 season last year, which also marked the first time in a decade that Solon didn't qualify for a postseason playoff spot.
This season, in addition to being 8-0, Solon is ranked second in computer points in its region of Division I teams, trailing only Cleveland St. Ignatius.
Solon made frequent use to versatile running back Kyle Hammonds to ensure a victory over Nordonia. Hammonds, a 5-foot-11, 175-pound junior, rushed for four touchdowns and finished with 130 yards.
Chris Humphrey and Jesse Circelli also scored touchdowns for Solon. Quarterback Jake Voigt completed 6 of 10 passes, but McQuaide said the Nordonia contest was destined to be more of a running contest.
"We didn't have to throw that much in this game," he said. "It was cold and it was muddy."
McQuaide said he was pleased with the final statistics regarding penalties and turnovers.
"In the week before this game, we were penalized 11 times. This time, we only had two penalties," he said. "And in this game, we didn't have any turnovers, while they (Nordonia) had six turnovers.
Despite the team's undefeated record and prominence in the computer rankings, McQuaide said he still insists on just going about things one game at a time. The Comets play Medina (4-4) Friday night.
"When we started this whole thing this year, the first thing we said we wanted to do was to win our league," McQuaide said. "We haven't won our league yet. Then, we'll worry about other things."
