Undefeated Comets clinch playoff berth

By STEVE NOVAK

After failing to make the playoffs last season for the first time in 10 years, Solon is back in the hunt for a state championship.

The Comets' 38-7 victory at Medina in a Northeast Ohio Conference gamee assured the Comets of hosting a first-round tournament contest.

The Comets are 9-0 and ranked second in the computer ratings in Division I, Region 1, second to Cleveland St. Ignatius.

In last Friday night's game, Solon put 14 points on the board in both the first and the second quarters. Running back Kyle Hammonds opened the scoring with a 3-yard touchdown run. Then quarterback Jake Voigt connected with Juan Lemus on a 5-yard scoring pass in the first quarter.

In the second quarter, senior running back Austin Hood scored on a 2-yard run from scrimmage. A few minutes later, Voigt crossed the end line on a 7-yard quarterback keeper play.

In the second half, Solon added points with a 27-yard field goal by A.J. Hicks. The final score came on a 50-yard run by junior tailback Christian Jackson.

Voigt now has a cumulative total of more than 1,500 yards in the air this season and a completion rate just short of 65 percent.

Coach Jim McQuaide has said he wants to put aside any talk about the playoffs until the season is completed. However, Solon and St. Ignatius, both with undefeated records, already wrapped up a home playoff game for the opening round of play on Nov. 6.

The Comets host Strongsville (3-6) Friday night.
