CONSTANCE H. THOMAS (Connie)
Constance H. Thomas, long time resident of Russell Township, died on November 30, 2009, in Euclid, OH. She was born on April 6, 1922, in Newark, NJ to Marion B. and William Hill Jr. She lived in Arlington and Rutherford, NJ before moving at age 7 to Brandywine Summit, PA (now called Chadds Ford.) She attended Chadds Ford Consolidated School from grades 2-10 and graduated in 1939 from West Chester High School. Connie was an accomplished musician and was the premier violinist for her high school orchestra.
Connie attended Mary Washington College in Fredricksburg, VA and graduated from Beacom Business School in Wilmington, DE. She worked for the DuPont Company as a secretary in the Organic Chemicals department until March 1943 when she joined the Navy WAVES. Connie went to Hunter College for boot training and then to Radio School at Miami University in Oxford, OH before she was assigned to Jacksonville Naval Air Station as a Radioman. She was stationed at Jax until November 1945 when she received an Honorable discharge.
Connie returned to work at DuPont until 1952. She married Robert E. Thomas in 1949 and the couple lived in West Chester, PA until 1956 when they transferred to Cleveland, OH and settled in Chagrin Falls. They were long time members of the United Methodist Church.
Connie was in the WAVES National Unit #133 until it disbanded but remained close with her WAVE friends and attended reunions as well as being a Charter Member of the Women in Military Service Memorial in Washington DC. She loved to travel, play golf, and to spend time with friends. She was a member of the United Methodist Church's Sarah Circle and "Holy Folders", the Lazy Daisies, and bridge club. Connie passed away peacefully on November 30, 2009.
Connie was pre-deceased by her parents Marion B. and William Hill Jr., sisters Mary Virginia Duval and Barbara Ann Lanning, and her husband Robert E. Thomas. She is survived by her brother William W. Hill, III and his wife Esther of Rehoboth Beach, DE, sister in law Nancy T. Jones of Wilmington, DE, three nephews William W. Hill IV and Steven D. Hill of Severna Park, MD, and Matthew W. Jones of River Vale, NJ; niece Pamela Korte of Wilmington, DE, great niece Caroline Hill Lewis, great nephew William W. Hill V. and many friends. She will be deeply missed.
An internment will be held at 2 PM on Saturday, December 5th at Riverview Cemetery. A memorial service will be held at 4 PM on Saturday, December 5th at the United Methodist Church of Chagrin Falls, OH at 20 South Franklin Street with a reception immediately following.
