Comets get shut out in defensive struggle

By STEVE NOVAK

Last year, Mayfield's football team went four games deep into the playoffs before finally being eliminated, one game short of making it to the title game.
Despite the losses that all teams face each year to senior graduation, Mayfield proved it was still a squad to be reckoned with one year later when the Wildcats dealt Solon its second loss of the season in a 6-0 defensive struggle last Friday night in a nonconference game.
Host Mayfield recording 11 quarterback sacks and held the Comets to just 37 yards total offense. The Comets gained 72 yards through the air, but lost 35 on the ground. Meanwhile, Mayfield rolled up 116 of its 123 yards on the ground.
Solon head coach Jim McQuaide didn't mince words about the Mayfield game.
"We had a terrible, terrible game, and Mayfield had a good game," he said. "We have to step up now. We have to coach better and we have to play better. It's not on any single person."
He also said his team's 2-2 record doesn't preclude the Comets from finishing the season with pre-season goals being accomplished.
"Nothing that we stated as our goals at the beginning of the season isn't impossible to be accomplished yet," McQuaide said. "We wanted to win our league (Northeast Ohio Conference) and we can still win our league. We wanted to make it to the playoffs, and we can still make it to the playoffs."
Solon hosts Hudson (1-3) Friday night at 7:30 p.m. in a homecoming game at Stewart Field in a nonleague contest. McQuaide said the Explorers' record is not a true indication of what type of team Hudson is.
"In the first half of every game they've played, the score was either tied or they were only down by a few points," he said. "They've got a very good quarterback and a very good running back."
Mayfield used a pair of third-quarter field goals to improve to 3-1.
Jake Voigt finished 11 of 23 passing for 72 yards. Brian Myerson caught three passes for 26 yards, Darryl Baldwin two passes for 24 yards and Eric Smoloff three passes for 11 yards. Kyle Hammonds agined 21 yards on 11 carries.
Tony Davidson and Matt Piscitello each recorded 12 tackles and Joe Janasek added 10 tackles.
