Chagrin, Kenston post CVC opening victories

By STEVE NOVAK

After three weeks of nonconference contests, regular season play got under way in the Chagrin Valley Conference last week. Two of the big winners were Chagrin Falls and Kenston.
In a neighborhood rivalry, Chagrin Falls defeated West Geauga last Friday, 25-0. Coach Mark Iammarino's Tigers (3-1) scored all of their touchdowns as a result of turnovers. The Wolverines surrendered the ball on four turnovers in the first half.
Chagrin Falls netted 172 yards rushing and 185 yards by passing. On defense, Chagrin's Ryan Takacs had 10 tackles, along with a fumble recovery and an interception.
Iammarino said he wants his team to maintain the poise it showed in the West Geauga game. The Tigers host Orange (2-2) at 7 p.m. Friday.
"They have some explosive athletes and they are able to get the ball to those athletes," Iammarino said about the Lions. "I told our players that we are close to playing at our potential. We have to focus on continuing to do that."
Orange was another victim of a game with a close score last week. The Lions dropped a 22-19 decision to Wickliffe.
Although Coach Nick Gerhard's Orange team held a 13-8 lead at the end of the first quarter, it finished the game being outrushed by Wickliffe by nearly a 3 to 1 margin. The Blue Devils had 307 yards rushing, while the Lions netted only 116 yards on the ground.
Host Kenston, despite having a 1-3 record, finds itself in first place in the CVC after a 33-8 defeat of Beachwood last Saturday.
Coach Roger Vasey's Bombers finished the contest with a total of 414 rushing yards. Four different members scored touchdowns, including a pair by A.J. Holderman.
Vasey's team now has to deal with West Geauga Friday night. He said his team has to be wary of the Wolverines' offensive potential.
"Our team responded well to a tough week of practice," Vassey said. "We wanted to narrow our focus and work on fundamentals. We're going to have to watch with West Geauga because they have a lot of skilled athletes. We want to continue to establish our running game."
Hawken dropped to an 0-4 record following a 45-13 loss to visiting Berkshire.
John Wilson scored on a 38-yard run for the Hawks. Later in the game, Hawken quarterback Zach McMains connected on a 29-yard TD pass to Jacob Minnaugh.
Hawken seeks its first win of the season when it hosts Grand Valley (2-2).
