Orange boys capture eighth straight CVC swim title

By STEVE NOVAK

The 2010 Chagrin Valley Conference boys' swim championships ended like the previous seven with Orange rolling to another title.

The Lions scored 284 points, followed by Kenston with 206, Chagrin Falls with 196 and Hawken with 191.

Orange took first place in the 200-yard medley, 400 freestyle and 200 freestyle relays, and senior co-captain Thomas Fellowes won the 100 and 50 freestyle events.

The team of Zach Melvin, Peter Moshier, Fellowes and David Klein won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:43.09. In the 400 freestyle relay, the foursome of Michael Martin, David Wang, Fellowes and Melvin won with a time of 3:24.85. In the 200 free relay, Klein, Moshier, Martin and Jake Ritchken won in 1:33.46.

Fellowes' winning time in the 50 free was 22.56 seconds, and he posted a 50.29 in the 100 free.

Orange had three second-place finishes. Moshier was runner-up in the 100 breaststroke with a 1:04.16. Kenston's Austin Dickey won the event in 1:03.30. Martin was second in the 200 free at 1:51.39, finishing behind Hawken's Micah Simpson, who won in 1:48.39. Klein was runner-up to Fellowes in the 50 free in 23.40 seconds.

Orange coach Tod Boyle said the boys have run through the entire season without a loss in any dual meets.

"We have a pretty good, hardworking group," he said. "We have some of the top-rated swimmers in the area, but we've built up a lot of depth on the team, too."

Fellowes said winning the CVC title serves as the proper attitude enhancement needed as the Lions prepare for sectional and district competition.

"For most schools, this is one of the last meets of the season," Fellowes said. "For most of us, winning the Chagrin Valley Conference is a confidence booster for going into the postseason."

Fellowes is one of four members of the Orange team who won All-American status last season. The other three are Moshier, Melvin and Martin. Swimmers attain All-American rank by turning in a time judged to be one of the best in the country during the season by high school swimmers in an individual event.

Chagrin Falls grabbed first-place honors in four events at the CVC championships. The Tigers' Jamie Englehardt won the 1-meter diving competition, scoring nearly 100 more points than the second-place finisher.

Chagrin's Davis Staley was a double winner, taking the 200 individual medley in 2:02.78 and the 100 butterfly in 54.74.

The Tigers' Jonathan Marc won the 100 backstroke with a clocking of 56.88 seconds. Teammate Austin Quinn was second in 59.84.

Hawken's Simpson also finished first in the 500 freestyle in 4:57.52. Teammate Nick Ranallo was second in 5:05.82.

Kenston had a second-place finish in the 200 freestyle relay, with the foursome of Craig Piunno, Nick Bester, Alex Kocheff and Ryan Astalos.
