Preppers claim boys' sectional swim crown

Throughout the Division II boys' sectional last Saturday at Hawken School, the swimmers from University School and Orange were among the top finishers in each of the races.

At the end of the day, final totals showed that the Preppers had a dominating lead in team points, giving them the Division II title. US finished with 518 points, and Orange was second with 249 points.

US claimed champions in all but one of the individual races. The Preppers won the 50-yard freestyle, the 200 freestyle, the 500 freestyle, the 100 backstroke, the 100 breaststroke, the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. Orange won the 100 freestyle.

The Preppers also won all three relays, the 200 freestyle, the 400 freestyle and the 200 medley. All swimmers and relay teams which finished either first or second qualify for district competition next weekend.

The winner for US in the 50 freestyle was Andrew Malone, with a time of 22:07 seconds. The second-place finisher was Orange's Thomas Fellowes in 22:58.

In the 100 freestyle, the winner was Korey Schneider, of US, with a time of 49.25 seconds, followed by teammate Sam Ruddock in 49.31 seconds.

In the 200 freestyle, US had a one-two finish. Ben Stewart Bates was the winner, and his teammate Mike Gaudiani was second. Their respective times were 1:44:25 and 1:44.41.

In the 500 freestyle, it was Gaudiani's turn to finish first and Stewart Bates' turn to be second. Gaudiani's winning time was 4:40.92, and Stewart Bates turned in a 4:44.66.

In the 100 backstroke, US's Nicholas Crane and Kevin Stang had a one-two finish. Their times were 53:56 and 54.33 seconds, respectively.

In the 100 breaststroke, the US duo of Schneider and Andrew Malone were first and second, turning in times of 59.64 and 1:00.85, respectively.

In the 100 butterfly, the winner was Davis Staley, of Chagrin Falls, with a clocking of 54.00 seconds. Second-place finisher was Russell Stack, of US, in 54.39.

In the 200 individual medley, it was another one-two finish for the Preppers with Crane winning and Stang coming in second. Crane's winning time was 1:53.94 and Stang finished in 1:59.19.

The teams from US and Orange finished one-two in the 200 freestyle relay. The Preppers' team of Malone, Gaudiani, Crane and Stewart Bates turned in a 1:30.44. Orange touched the wall at 1:31.26.

In the 400 freestyle relay, it was again US placing first and Chagrin Falls second. Gaudiani, Crane, Russell Stack and Stewart Bates won the race with a time of 3:20.52. Chagrin Falls came in at 3:24.82.

In the 200 medley relay, US won the event with a time of 1:39.95. The members of the winning relay were Stang, Schneider, Russell Stack and Malone. Hawken was runner-up in 1:44.36.

Chagrin Falls's Jamie Englehardt won the 1-meter diving. Gilmour Acvademy's Alex Lohiser was second.


Solon wins Division I


In boys' Division I competition at Mayfield High School, Solon amassed 480 points to outdistance runner-up Shaker Heights, which had 390 points.

In the 50 freestyle, Solon's Dan Telljohann was second with a time of 22.32 seconds. The winner was Mayfield's Dan Nemeth in 21.30.

In the 100 freestyle, Telljohann again finished second behind Nemeth. Their respective times were 47.26 and 49.64 seconds.

Solon's Jamie Gallagher wong the 200 freestyle in 1:47.03 and the 500 freestyle in 4:54.52.

The Comets' Terrence Wong won the 100 backstroke in 56.05 seconds and the 100 butterfly in 51.17 seconds.

Solon's Alex Polishchuk was the winner in the 100 breaststroke with a clocking of 1:04.59. In the 200 individual medley, Polishchuk grabbed another first-place finish with a 2:04.86.

In the 400 freestyle relay, Solon won with a time of 3:16.80. Members of the relay were Gallagher, Wong, Telljohann and Polishchuk.

The Comets' foursome of Ryan Carson, Dan McMahon, Polishchuk and Wong won the 200 medley relay with a time of 1:40.94.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the Comets' foursome of McMahon, Gallagher, Telljohann and Justin Bauer was first in 1:29.95.
