New Grantwood supervisor outlines course of action

By SUE REID

Solon Recreation Director Donald W. Holub said Monday that he welcomes the challenge of supervising Grantwood Golf Course.

Mr. Holub, who has served as the recreation director for 21 years, began his additional role March 1.

Mayor Susan A. Drucker said recently that she was placing the city-owned course temporarily under his direction. Longtime Grantwood Director Gary Mazzeo is retiring next month.

"I've known Gary for nearly 30 years," Mr. Holub said. "It will be sad to see him go. He and Grantwood go together."

Mr. Holub said he is looking forward to his new role. "It is one my staff here at the recreation center will help me out with," he said. "I'm obviously going to ask a lot more of them."

Mr. Holub said that during at least the first couple of months in the summer, he will split his time, spending 60 percent of it at the center and about 40 percent at the course. He said it is important to have "face time" at Grantwood and get to know the staff. "They are all good people," he said.

Mr. Holub and head groundskeeper David Peck both attended Solon High School and went to college together. He also has worked with golf pro Scott Pollock, he said.

Mr. Holub said he will continue to pick Mr. Mazzeo's brain for information. "I want Grantwood to be a resident-friendly place," Mr. Holub said. "That will be the No. 1 thing.

"I think it's an asset to the City of Solon," he said of Grantwood, "and we have to treat it as an asset and make sure we're getting everything out of the course that we can."

The season will open April 1 depending on weather, Mr. Holub said.

He said he was going to meet with all Grantwood employees this week.

"It's going to be a process," he said.
