DAVIS DOROTHY EMMA
DOROTHY EMMA DAVIS
1925-2010
Dorothy Davis passed away peacefully in her Chardon home on March 15, 2010 after many months of declining health. Mrs. Davis resided in the Cleveland area for her entire life. As a twelve-year-old girl living in East Cleveland, she met her future husband, Wayne, who delivered bread for Star Bakery while in high school. After graduating from Shaw High School, she worked as an assistant buyer for raw materials during World War II. After the war, Dorothy met up with Wayne who offered to change a flat tire for her as she was returning home from work. Shortly thereafter, they were married on April 17, 1948 at St. John Lutheran Church. Seven years later, they welcomed their only child, Cindy, who is currently a fourth grade teacher for the Orange City Schools. Dorothy spent most of her adult life as a housewife while her husband worked for General Electric for 34 years prior to his death in 1974. When her husband became ill, Dorothy began working part-time as a paraprofessional at Oxford School in the Cleveland Heights-University Heights school system. She retired after 21 years of service. In her free time she enjoyed traveling, especially Caribbean cruises. She also played golf at Orchard Hills Golf and Country Club where she was a member for many years. Throughout her life, Dorothy's passion for animals was evident. In her later years, her golden retrievers were a big part of her life. She also enjoyed spending time with two special boys, Andrew and Rylan White, to whom she was an adopted grandmother. Most recently, Dorothy delighted in the companionship of her caretaker, Roxanne Abshire, who kept her busy with a variety of activities, but she especially enjoyed their girls' day out on Fridays.
Dorothy is survived by her daughter, Cindy Davis, and nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends at the Schulte and Mahon-Murphy Funeral Home, 5252 Mayfield Rd., Lyndhurst on Thursday, March 18, 2010 from 4-8 p.m. with private internment at Knollwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations in Dorothy Davis' memory can be made to Rescue Village/Geauga Humane Society, 15463 Chillicothe Rd., Russell Twp., OH 44072 or Hospice of the Western Reserve, 300 E. 185th St., Cleveland, OH 44119.
