Comets get back on winning track against Hudson
By STEVE NOVAK
After suffering losses in its previous two games, Solon's football team got itself back into the win column last Friday as the Comets hosted Hudson and came out with a 38-13 nonconference victory.
The victory brought Solon's record to 3-2. For head coach Jim McQuaide, the contest proved to be just about what he was seeking after the team's losses to Mentor and Mayfield.
McQuaide said he was pleased with the way his team was able to move the ball both on the ground and in the air. The Comets scored two rushing touchdowns and had three more touchdowns by way of the pass.
"We're really trying to be more consistent," he said. "We had a disastrous game the week before (6-0 loss to Mayfield)."
The 38 points was the Comets' highest point total this season.
Quarterback Jake Voigt threw a pair of touchdown passes, as well directing a running game that seemed to become more effective as the game wore on. He was 14 of 22 for 159 yards.
Brian Myerson caught five passes for 38 yards and Piscietello three for 40 yards.
Kyle Hammonds rushed for two touchdowns on runs of one and four yards. He finished with 81 yards on 23 attempts.
Leading tacklers for the Comets were Andy McGill with 11 and Kevin Hicks with nine.
The Hudson game was also important in Solon's climb back up the computer points ranking ladder. The team's two losses knocked it down a few notches, but last Friday's victory found the Comets 12th in computer point rankings in their region of Division I. The top eight teams in each region qualify for post-season action.
McQuaide said he was especially happy with the job done by his offensive line in the Hudson game. He added that several of the defensive linemen had an outstanding night of stopping forward progress, and he stressed the importance of Matt Piscitello's 51-yard touchdown interception.
On Friday, visits Lakewood in a Northeast Ohio Conference opener. McQuaide said Lakewood's 1-4 record is deceiving.
"This is a good team with a new coach. They just took on undefeated Garfield Heights and beat them last week (7-0)," McQuaide said.
