Orange posts sixth straight baseball win

The Orange baseball team extended its winning streak to six games and improved to 7-6 overall.

In a Chagrin Valley Conference game, the Lions edged visiting Chagrin Falls 9-8 as Max Provateare's single scored Matt Goodman with the winning run in the bottom of the eighth inning. Provateare had three hits and two runs batted in and scored once.

The Lions were down 6-2 in the seventh inning and tied the score. Orange also trailed 8-6 going into the ninth and scored three runs to win the game.

Starting pitcher Sam Foltz earned the victory. He went six innings, gave up two runs on eight hits, struck out three and walked two. Ryan Zdolshek pitched 2/3 of an inning. He gave up four runs, including two earned, three hits, walked two and struck out one.

The Tigers' Cory Stack pitched two innings and took the loss. He allowed three runs on five, walked one and struck out one. Stack is 5-1.

Nate Debick paced the Tigers by going 2-for-4 with two runs, a double and three RBI. Geraci went 2-for-4 with a triple, two runs and a stolen base. Jimmy Boldt went 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI. Kurt Vidmer had a single and two RBIs.

In another CVC game against Orange, the Chagrin Falls erupted for six runs in the first to post a 12-2 victory in six innings.

Justin Carbone pitched all six innings and gave up six hits, one earned run, struck out three and walked one.

Provateare had the game with a three-run home run.

Stack started and pitched one inning for Chagrin Falls, giving up six runs on seven hits and striking out one. Stack fell to 5-2. Zdolshek came on in relief and in four innings gave up six runs including five earned, six hits, walked two and struck out two. Orzen pitched the final three outs.

Porter was the only Tiger to record more than one hit as he went 2-for-2 with a double.

Orange also downed Beachwood in CVC action, 4-2. Darian Johnson pitched seven innings, giving up 10 hits, two runs, striking out one and walking four.

Thomas Advent hit a two-run double to give the Lions the win. Eric Slomovitz had three hits.

Orange is 4-2 in CVC play.


Chagrin improves to 13-5


The Chagrin Falls baseball had a rough start last week, but finished with a doubleheader sweep on Saturday.

The Tigers, 13-5, are ranked 12th in this week's Ohio High School Baseball Coaches Association poll.

The Tigers defeated Orwell Grand Valley, 9-3, and Warren Champion, 9-6. Champion was a Division III regional finalist last year.

Keith Orzen got his first varsity start in the first game, the win over Champion. He pitched 5 2/3 innings, allowed six runs on seven hits, walked three, struck out five and hit five batters. Orzen improved to 3-0. Cory Stack came on in relief and picked up his first save. He pitched 1 1/3 innings and gave up one hit, walked one and struck out one.

Jack Hinman nearly hit for the cycle as he was 3-for-4 with a single, triple and home run. He also scored three runs, stole a base and drove home two runs. Marc Geraci was 2-for-2 with two runs scored and a triple. Kurt Vidmer was 2-for-3 with two runs batted in and a stolen base. Kyle Mansour had two hits and an RBI.

In the second game, Timmy Porter pitched a complete game to pick up his first win of the season against Grand Valley. He pitched seven innings, gave up three runs, including one earned. Porter scattered seven hits, struck out six and didn't walk a batter. He is 1-1.

Mansour went 3-for-4 with a run scored, a double, a stolen base and a run batted in. Hinman went 2-for-3 with two runs, a double, a home run, a stolen base and two RBI. Orzen was 2-for-3 with two runs scored, a home run and two RBI. Geraci had two hits and a stolen base.


Kenston edges Aurora


Kyle Schmidt belted a two--run homer in the top of the seventh to lift Kenston to a 12-11 victory over Aurora in the CVC. Schmidt finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and one run.

Nick Levine was 3-for-5 with five RBI and two runs. Each team had 12 hits.

Michael Fearer relieved Schmidt and pitched the final three innings for his second win of the season.

The Bombers improved to 7-7 overall and 3-3 in the CVC. Aurora dropped to 6-6 overall and 3-3 in the league.
