In the second week of Chagrin Valley Conference action, the winning teams from the area included Chagrin Falls, West Geauga and Hawken.
After last Friday's 42-13 defeat of visiting Orange, Chagrin Falls stands 2-0 in the CVC and 4-1 overall. Coach Mark Iammarino's Tigers had a combined total of more than 400 rushing and passing yards last weekend.
The Tigers' performance in the first half of the season hasn't gone unnoticed by the people who dish out computer point rankings. Last weekend found Chagrin Falls with the highest computer point totals in their region of Division III teams. The Tigers' only loss this year was in overtime to Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin, 33-27.
Chagrin Falls' Chris Trinnetti completed 14 passes for 225 yards, including two touchdown tosses and Chris Gorman was the leading rusher with 76 yards in 10 carries.
Orange's Terrence Thomas accounted for most of his team's rushing yardage. He gained 102 of his team's 127 yards. Quarterback Ryan Bitzer had 107 passing yards.
Chagrin Falls travels to Beachwood for a CVC contest Saturday. The Bison are 2-3 overall and 0-1 in the league. They own over East High School and Lincoln West, both from the Cleveland Municipal School District.
Orange takes a 2-3 overall mark to Lake County to play at Perry (4-1).
West Geauga rebounded from its Week Four loss to Chagrin Falls by netting a 31-6 victory over visiting Kenston Friday. Coach Dave Bors' Wolverines have a 3-2 record and are 1-1 in the CVC.
Wolverines' quarterback Louie Link was 13 of 23 for 331 yards against Kenston and also rushed for 104 yards in 11 carries.
"It was by far his best game," Bors said. "He is just getting to the point where he's getting more comfortable in what we do. We want him to understand that he doesn't have to throw the home-run ball on every single down."
Link threw a scoring passes of 96 and 48 yards to Kevin Sonnie. Link also scored on a 26-yard keeper.
Kenston's Kevin DeFranco scored on a 66-yard pass interception. Jake Caputo led Kenston in rushing with 58 yards.
This Friday, the Wolverines host Wickliffe. The Blue Devils have a 1-4 mark, and their sole victory was a 23-19 defeat of Orange in Week Four.
Kenston (1-4 overall) hosts Aurora (3-2 overall) Friday night.
After more than 30 years of coaching, Hawken head coach Cliff Walton knows the value of patience of persistence. Both qualities paid off last week when Hawken picked up its first win of the season in a 49-14 defeat of Grand Valley.
Walton said he was pleased with the team's consistent performance throughout the game.
"I'm happy with the fact that this time we played pretty much a four-quarter game for the first time this season," he said. "The up-front guys did a good job. We were able to establish our running because of our line."
Hawken rushed for more than 200 yards against Grand Valley. Halfback John Wilson led his team by gaining 123 yards in eight carries. Quarterback Zach McMains threw for two touchdowns.
On the defensive side of the ball, Walton said that Cooper Keller has been leading the team in tackles with 41. Second in the category is Kent Green with 38 tackles, he said.
On Friday, the Hawks go on the road for a game with Cuyahoga Heights, a team with a 4-1 record.
"Almost every year, Cuyahoga Heights is a playoff team," Walton said. "Their only loss this year is to Kirtland. They (Cuyahoga Heights) run an option offense that keeps you off guard."
