Driveway disruptions part of concrete work

Driveway disruptions part of concrete work

By SUE REID

Concrete replacement in subdivisions has evolved in recent years, and there is a greater impact on residents, according to Dan Driscoll, Solon's construction project administrator.

As a result, residents in affected areas for the upcoming program gathered at City Hall last week for an informational meeting.

Mr. Driscoll detailed what they can expect in this year's concrete-replacement program, specifically the fact that many will not have access to their driveways for about two weeks. It depends on the weather, he said.

The program will affect residents in the following areas: Cannon Estates, including Stephanie Circle and the cul-de-sac; the Harper Ridge subdivision, including Ridge Lane; the Liberty Hill subdivision cul-de-sac at Cheshire Place; Sedgefield Oval at Selworthy Lane; and Arthur Road, from Solon Boulevard to the railroad tracks.

Konstruction King is the contractor and is scheduled to begin work this week. A representative was in attendance at the meeting, along with the project's inspector.

Mr. Driscoll said work will begin on Cheshire Place, and the contractor will move over to Sedgefield Oval. He said residents will receive a memo from the city which would be placed on their front door.

"These are typically important messages," he said. The memo will let the residents know that the contractor is coming onto their street and give a description how he will proceed with construction, Mr. Driscoll said.

"You can expect there will be time you won't get in your driveway," Mr. Driscoll said.

He told residents that they need to provide for the city information on such things as whether they have an invisible fence or sprinkler system.

In addition, Mr. Driscoll said, those residents with special needs who need access to their driveways at all times must notify the city. They can call (440) 349-6745. "We can't do it for everyone," he said of getting in the driveways, "but we can in certain circumstances."

Mr. Driscoll also told residents that in the removal process of the pavement, utilities such as cable and gas, may be interrupted.

"They get so close to the pavement that they get disrupted," Mr. Driscoll said. "This is something that can happen. It's not always the contractors fault." He said if this occurs, "we will work with the utility to get them restored."

Mr. Driscoll said it would be helpful for residents to try to park at a neighbor's house during the time they have no access to their driveway, if at all possible. The city will notify safety forces of these projects and they will be aware of cars on the streets.

"You will not get a ticket if the car is on the street for two weeks," Mr. Driscoll said. Also, residents should put their garbage out as they normally do, he said.

Once the contractor completes the work and does lawn restoration, mailboxes will be reset, he said. "The city will make sure the mailboxes are set firmly."

"If mailboxes are pulled out, we will make sure addresses get put on so that safety forces can identify your house," Mr. Driscoll said.

He said that with these types of projects, things don't always go smoothly but that resident concerns will be addressed regularly. He also said that weather is something that can impact the schedule of the projects.

"We will try to keep good communication throughout this," he said.
