It's on to state track for area thinclads

With a dozen top finishes in regional track competition last week, Chagrin Valley high schools will send a fast and strong group of athletes to the state meet at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium in Columbus this weekend.

The Gilmour Academy girls' team, led by senior distance runner Rebekka Simko's pair of individual championships, along with a relay title, won the Division III regional championship in Navarre.

Also a double winner was Orange senior hurdler Fred Roberts, who paced the Lions to third place in the team standings in the boys' Division II regional at Ravenna.

Solon's boys had a pair of individual winners, both seniors, at the Youngstown Division I regional to place fourth in the team standings. Robert McNair won the 400 meters in 48.98, and Conner Paez captured the 1,600 title with a time of 4:26.90.

In the girls' Division I competition at Youngstown, West Geauga junior Kori Chapic won the 300 hurdles in 44.07.

The Chagrin Falls girls' team got an individual victory from senior Kirsten Stevenson and won the four-by-800-meter relay in the Ravenna Division II regional. Senior Ryan Kochert won the pole vault at 14-foot-6 for the Tigers at Ravenna. Stevenson teamed with Aurora Chaffee, Kate Girouard and Susannah Shelley to win the relay in 9:33.33.

Gilmour's Simko won the 1,600 meters in 5:05.12 and the 800 in 2:16.10. She was joined by Alexis Anton, Grace Brennan and Kathryn Drew to win the four-by-400 relay in 4:01.72.

Roberts won the 110-meter high hurdles in 14.62 and the 300 hurdles in 38.55 for Orange.

Gilmour senior Bart Merkel captured the 3,200-meter distance crown in the boys' Division III regional at Navarre with a time of 9:25.63.

The top four place winners in regional competition advanced to the state tournament.

The Solon girls' team had a pair of second places in the Division I regional at Youngstown. Alex Paskell was was runner-up in the long jump at 17-foot-5 1/2. The Comets' four-by-100 relay team of Kristen Baldwin, Bethany Lobaza, Paskell and Paige Yaeger took second with a time of 48.59.

In boys' Division II, Orange's Michael Martin was runner-up in the 1,600 meters with a time of 4:22.69. The Chagrin Falls four-by-400 relay team of Bill Cale, Matt Digel, Ricky Kochert and Bradley Munday took second in 3:22.87.

The following competitors took third places in the regional tournaments: Joey Drockton, West Geauga, pole vault, 13-foot-9; AJ Hicks, Solon, discus, 166-foot-1, and shot put, 56-foot-7; Matt Digel, Chagrin Falls, 400 meters, 49.73; Nathan Lelonis, Chagrin Falls, 100-meter hurdles, 15.30; Chantel Richardson, West Geauga, long jump, 17-foot-5; Therese Haiss, Solon, 1,600 meters, 5:17.45; Susannah Shelley, Chagrin Falls, 400 meters, 58.64; and the Orange boys' four-by-400 relay of Matt Clinkscale, Cameron Grays, Michael Martin and Fred Roberts, 3:23.68.

Fourth-place regional winners: Caden Johnson, Solon, high jump, 6-foot-6; Jake Willen, Hawken, 200 meters, 22.52; Aly Platek, West Geauga, 800 meters, 2:15.82; Larissa Sylver, Solon, long jump, 17-foot-3 1/2; Paige Yaeger, West Geauga, 300 hurdles, 44.63; Meghan Pryatel, Gilmour, 1,600 meters, 5:20.91; the Orange boys' four-by-200 relay team of Jacob Brister, Matt Clinkscale, Cameron Grays and Matt Jones, 1:30.09; the West Geauga girls' four-by-200 team of Stephanie Brinning, Chantel Richardson, Allison Tyree and Kelley Williams, 1:42.44; the Solon girls' four-by-800 team of Therese Haiss, Caitlin Hartnett, Claire Wieczorek and Melissa Yasnowski, 9:24.76; and the Chagrin Falls girls' four-by-400 team of Aurora Chaffee, Susannah Shelley, Kirsten Stevenson and Alicia Wood, 4:01.99.

The Hawken girls' team qualified one individual and one relay for the state Division III tournament. Alexandra Markovich qualified in the 1,600 meters with a time of 5:17.67. She was joined on the qualifying four-by-800 relay by Julia Bramante, Elizabeth Bruml and Kerrin Sunshine with a time of 9:53.08.
