Beatlemania missed Blossom beat

Beatlemania missed Blossom beat

It's random tidbit time. Let's begin with the sad but true. Beatlemania was not on the bill under the Blossom Time big-top tent last weekend. To find out why, we called "the voice of Chagrin," aka John Kline.

It seems that the reasonable-facsimile Beatles had the chance to perform a multi-week gig, and the dates for said gig fell on their usual Blossom Time Saturday.

The annual jam-packed, free Beatlemania concert has become such a tradition that Beatles lovers were disappointed in a major way. But they can dry their tears. Beatlemania has not forsaken Chagrin Falls forever. Will they be back under the Blossom Time big top in 2011? Fingers crossed.

Next. If you live on South Main Street or travel that way regularly, you will be happy to know that interminably long red light at South Main and Washington streets is about to get shorter.

As I write, a camera-sensor thingy was being installed. It's supposed to see when cars are beginning to line up and then change the light to green. As far as we know, the camera sensor is not the kind that issues traffic tickets.

Thank South Main Street resident and Village Council President Steve Patton, who got the fix into this year's budget. He said, when the new timed traffic system was installed during streetscape, something fell through the cracks, and the light did not go on line with the rest of the system.

South Mainers have been bugging Steve to get the light fixed, and he said he doesn't want people to think he was looking out for his own interests.

Nah! Steve has been known to walk his kids to school and hoofs it to his law office on Bell Street, so he commands the green light by pushing the pedestrian traffic-light-control button.

Third. Jaycees and Eagles Club flag advocate Troy Young stopped the other day to tell us about a new addition to the street-flag program.

Didn't have to look far. Old Glory was flying from poles along the west side of South Main Street, which Troy helped install in time for the big Memorial Day Blossom Time weekend.

But Troy said the real credit goes to South Main Street residents Kathryn and Robert Falls, who donated the flags.

By the way, he is working on adding street flags along Bell and Maple streets and eventually every main artery into our town. Troy's motto appears to be that a town can never have too much red, white and blue.

Last but not least. You have heard about the Tea Party political movement, but, raise your hands, how many of you know about the Coffee Party?

Local angle here is that there is a chapter in the Chagrin Falls-Solon area organized by Preeti Gill, of Moreland Hills. Mission of the nationally organized group is not anti-government but to promote a government that is accountable and principled and conducts itself in a civil way, thus setting an example and rubbing off on the rest of us.

It is possible, Coffee Party people say, to build a bridge across the canyon of differences between Americans of all political stripes.

Yet the question that begs to be answered is, if they build that bridge, will anyone come? We wonder, is the Coffee Party on a fool's errand or is it doing God's work?
