Seniors find complex fills housing needs

The freedom of apartment living is what Solon resident Rosemary Vojtek said she enjoys most about living in the Carrington Court senior housing complex on Aurora Road (Route 43).

The 10-year Solon resident voted for the rezoning in 2004 to allow the project to move forward, she said. Ms. Vojtek said the apartment's location is ideal and provides her the convenience to drive to a variety of locations in the city, including the Solon Public Library and the Solon Senior Center.

"It's near everything," apartment resident Elaine Miller agreed. Mrs. Miller, who moved in two weeks ago after relocating from Cincinnati to be closer to family, said she and her family did not even look anywhere else in the city.

"My daughter-in-law said, 'There's this wonderful place,'" Mrs. Miller said. "I have everything here that I need."

Carrington Court, which features 48 single-family homes and over 200 apartments, held a grand-opening celebration yesterday (Aug. 25) for its second apartment building.

Kris Kutz, director of marketing for Gross Builders, of North Royalton, said the demand for those suites was so great that the company decided on a second building.

"That says a lot in today's economy and some of the uncertainties," Mr. Kutz said. "It speaks volumes for that site." The location is being well received, he said.

The second building at the complex is larger then the first and features 80 suites, Mr. Kutz said. A third building is being planned for next year "assuming today's pace maintains," he said.

"We hope to get the second building in and ready for lease by next spring or fall," he said. "The demand is better then we have forecasted."

Mr. Kutz said that even in this economy the sale of the houses are going well. "We just sold one last week, and five are under contract and occupied at this point," he said.

Mrs. Vojtek said she has moved so much in past years that she chose Carrington Court because she did not want the ownership of a home and the responsibilities that come with it.

"I moved there to scale down to a one-bedroom, one-bath apartment," she said. "I have been widowed for 12 years already." Mrs. Vojtek, who moved in in June, said she also voted for the rezoning there.

"My name has been on the list from the beginning," she said.

"I wanted new construction," Mrs. Vojtek said. "I had never been in anything new."

Mrs. Miller said the apartment has a very well-laid out floor plan.

"I sold my condo and decided that I didn't want to buy anything again at my age," she said. "My children and grandchildren are a block and a half away."

Mrs. Miller said that since she is new to the area she has not explored that much, but the complex "is so near everything.

"It's so handy and self-contained," she said.
