By STEVE NOVAK
The showdown is set in the Chagrin Valley Conference Friday night at 7 at C.S. Harris Stadium in Chagrin Falls. That's when Chagrin Falls and Aurora -- leaders of the Chagrin Division with 4-0 records -- meet with the winner taking the upper hand with two games remaining.
Chagrin Falls remained on its quest for a post-season playoff berth with a 44-14 defeat of visiting Wickliffe on homecoming night last Friday.
The Tigers are 6-1 overall and stand atop the Ohio High School Athletic Association Division III, Region 9 computer rankings.
Two weeks ago, when his team beat Beachwood 49-0, Chagrin Falls coach Mark Iammarino said his squad was beginning to diversify its offense. More players were getting involved in putting points on the board, he said.
The trend continued against Wickliffe as five players scored. Quarterback Chris Trinetti completed nine of 11 passes for 130 yards and Chris Gorman gained 95 yards in eight carries.
This week, Iammarino said he was pleased with the way his defense held the Wickliffe Wing-T offensive in check. He said it was the first time his squad has faced that type of an offensive set this season.
Chagrin Falls has won five games in a row and has scored more than 40 points in three of those games.
Aurora is 5-2 overall.
In another homecoming night contest, Hawken gave its students and parents a victory with a 35-18 defeat of visiting Independence last Friday. The Hawks retired the jersey of Jeffrey Alexander Dobay, a 2008 graduate who died from cancer in August.
The Hawks (2-2, 2-5) displayed a strong combination of running and passing. Quarterback Zach McMains threw a pair of touchdown passes and halfback John Wilson gained 136 yards in 18 carries.
Hawken coach Cliff Walton said he was pleased by the running of Wilson, as well as by the four pass receptions of Jake Willen.
"They're two good pieces. They're two very different types of runners," Walton said. "Jake has really good speed and can outrace people. John makes really good decisions when he has the ball. He knows where to go when he hits the hole."
Hawken travels to Fairport Harbor (0-4,1-6) Friday night.
Orange also had a successful homecoming-night victory as the Lions (1-3, 3-4) topped Beachwood (0-4, 2-5), 48-8. The victory broke a three-game losing streak.
Josh Thomas ran for 142 yards in 13 carries and scored three touchdowns, including a 65-yard run.
Ronelle Lovelace broke free for a 70-yard touchdown on a punt return in the second quarter.
Orange finished the game with 237 rushing yards and had another 66 yards gained through the air.
Coach Nick Gerhard's Lions host West Geauga, a 27-7 loser to Aurora last week. The loss snapped a two-game win streak.
In West Geauga's 27-7 loss at Aurora, the Wolverines only score came on a 45-yard touchdown run in the second quarter by Jeff Corbo. Aurora had a combined total of nearly 300 yards rushing and passing.
Corbo gained 49 yards on three carries and qyuarterback Lou Link completed three of nine passes for 43 yards. Anthony Cataliota caught two passes for 31 yards.
West Geauga (2-2, 4-3) was held to 96 total rushing yards. The Wolverines turned over the ball twice on fumbles.
Kenston dropped a 48-21 decision to visiting Perry on homecoming night. The Bombers (1-3, 1-6) had touchdowns from Pat Porter, Tony Winn and Jim Tomcufcik. Tomcufcik led the Bombers' ground attack with 156 yards on 30 carries.
Kenston travels to Wickliffe (1-3, 1-6) Friday night.
