MARGARET MAYO TIPPIT

Margaret Mayo Tippit was born on July 24, 1927, in Dobb's Ferry, NY, daughter of the late Lena and Leonard Mayo. She moved to Cleveland in 1941 and graduated from Cleveland Heights High School in 1944. She graduated from Smith College in 1948.

She worked for three years at Reliance Electric & Engineering Co. before marrying C. Carlisle Tippit in 1951.

Margaret was a generous, quiet philanthropist both in the Cleveland area and around the country. In addition to raising funds for many local and national organizations, she generously donated her own funds and time to many organizations, including Planned Parenthood, Laurel School, University School, the Cleveland Clinic, and Smith College.

She was a former board member and President of Planned Parenthood in Cleveland from 1973-1975. She was a volunteer and chairman of the Garden Center of Greater Cleveland's White elephant Sale. She was active on the women's Committee of the Cleveland Orchestra. She was president of the women's republican's club of Chagrin Valley and was a member of the Junior League of Cleveland and Orlando, FL.

She was an enthusiastic traveler and a member of the Traveler's Century Club, and organization for those who've been to 100 or more countries. She traveled to 190 countries and took over 100 cruises.

Margaret was the loving wife of the late C. Carlisle Tippit (2003), as well as a loving mother and grandmother. She is survived by her daughters — Nancy (Mrs. Donald) Navatsyk of Chardon, Virginia Tippit of Boquete, Panama; son — Carl Tippit of Chagrin Falls; daughter — Susan (Mrs. Richard) Rafter of Seattle, WA, and daughter Christine Tippit of Calloway, FL. Additionally she is survived by 21 grandchildren and her sister Kathryn (Mrs. George) Loomis of Chagrin Falls.

Memorial services were held Tuesday, August 24, at Fairmount Presbyterian Church, 2757 Fairmount Blvd., Cleveland Hts., OH. The family prefers that those who wish make contributions in her name to Planned Parenthood of Northeast Ohio, 3500 Lorain Ave., #400, Cleveland, OH 44113 or to the Smith College Alumnae Fund, The Alumnae House, 33 Elm St., Northampton, MA 01063, or a charity of choice.
