Trucks from Solon haul dirt into Bainbridge

By JOAN DEMIRJIAN

Trucks hauling excavation materials have been traveling on Bainbridge Road from a construction project in Solon into and through Bainbridge Township.

In the $12 million project on Bainbridge Road in Solon, sanitary sewers are being installed, along with new pavement, curbs, a culvert and sidewalks. The trucks are carrying fill dirt to a property in Bainbridge on Bainbridge Road, where it will be stored until needed for backfill at the construction site in Solon.

Bainbridge Road resident Sue Davis said the trucks can be heard clanking at the site at 4 a.m. They are going back and forth to Solon, where they are working on the road, she said. "It's constant truck traffic."

She said one truck lost its load in front of her yard, sending rocks and dirt into the grass.

She questioned if any money has been set aside for damage to the road, and why the trucks are crossing the county line.

Bainbridge Township Trustee Jeff Markley said there has been a complaint of dirt piled at the site.

"Shane is working with the prosecutor's office," he said of township Zoning Inspector Shane Wrench.

"It's a private deal," Mr. Markley said, between the property owner and the construction company.

However, when the road needs repairs, it will be paid for by Geauga County residents, he said.

Geauga County Engineer Robert Phillips said he has not received any complaints. "It is a public road," he said. If overloads are proven, tickets could be issued, he said.

If the property owner wants to rent his property for storing the fill, there is no reason he cannot do that, Mr. Phillips said.

Mr. Wrench said they are monitoring the site where the trucks have been dumping dirt from the construction site on Bainbridge Road in Solon. The mound now is about 100 feet high, he said.

"I went to Solon and talked to the project manager," Mr. Wrench said. "I told him, once it is done, they need to stabilize the site. That includes planting grass." Silt fences are in place, he said, and this week he saw that the mound has been seeded and covered with straw. "It needed to be done," he said.

They will be taking the dirt back to the construction site and using it for backfill, Mr. Wrench said, and they hope it will be removed before December.

Some of the other dirt, which is not good for backfill, is being trucked by way of Bainbridge Road to a dump site on Treat Road in Aurora.

Once the dirt is taken back to the construction site, the site in Bainbridge must be restored to its original condition, Mr. Wrench said.
