Drum roll, please ...new master plan ready
By SUE REID
After nearly a year of review and revisions, Solon council members approved an ordinance at Monday's meeting adopting a new City of Solon master plan.
City Planning Director Robert S. Frankland said the plan, which is made up of seven different segments, is the first to be adopted in over 35 years and the first to be created in-house. He credited the former and current administration, as well as department heads and planning department for input.
"Without their skills and abilities, this plan could not have been done," he said.
Mr. Frankland also recognized the master plan citizens committee, which was established in 2001 and met until 2005.
"They devoted five years to this," he said. "Their input was invaluable."
Mr. Frankland said the adoption of the master plan is a "very big step for the community."
He also noted that revisions to the plan, as requested by council, include the removal of the recommendation for Industrial I-2 zoning at the corner of Richmond and Solon roads and the proposed Office O-1 zoning on the west side of SOM Center Road (Route 91), opposite of the Solar Center shopping plaza. Council began review of the plan in 2009.
The segments adopted as part of the ordinance include the central retail district plan, the economic development plan, the industrial core plan, the physical inventory and demographics analysis, the traffic master plan, the sanitary-sewer master plan and the statement of master plan policies, goals and objectives.
Councilman Lon D. Stolarksy commended Mr. Frankland for his work in creating "this comprehensive document."
Councilman Edward H. Kraus also applauded Mr. Frankland's efforts.
"This is a tool for us as we go into the future," Mr. Kraus said.
