Life's very interesting as it passes in blur

BEYOND MY CONTROL, BY CHRISTINE THOME

Life's very interesting as it passes in blur

Am I the only one who feels like time is moving way too fast?

It's December already? Really? How did this happen?

I swear it's only September, and back-to-school shopping should be at the top of my list -- not Christmas shopping. However, if I've had a three-month nap, I certainly didn't benefit from it. My eyes are still droopy, my energy level is still low, and, most importantly, my weight has not dropped. If I'm going to sleep for three months, I expect to use up all my stored fat and shed a few pounds. I must have the Costco version of fat storage. There's always one more place to put it.

"Mom, my second-semester tuition bill is due," my college daughter stated over the phone. It's always so nice to hear from your children who have gone away. Especially when they need money.

"Second semester? What happened to the first semester?" I swear I just dropped her off.

"You must have paid it, because they let me go to class and sleep in the dorm," she said.

Whew. That's a relief. Especially with Christmas just around the corner.

And speaking of Christmas, weren't we just shooting off fireworks and celebrating the Fourth of July? How did we go so quickly from celebrating our independence to becoming dependent on credit cards to get through another holiday?

"Are we going somewhere for spring break this year?" my son asked me the other day.

"Spring break? I can't think that far ahead, that's months away!" I cried. Just thinking about dinner in six hours is a stretch for me.

"Not really," he said. "December will be over, and then there's less than three months until the school break. We didn't go anywhere last year, and I really want to go to Florida to see Grandma this year."

How did we go from December to April in a blink of an eye? But he's right. If I want to even consider getting a large family from Ohio to Florida during the mass exodus called spring break, I have to start planning now.

Last night, I caught my husband, John, typing frantically on his computer.

"Whatcha doing?" I asked, trying to peer over his shoulder. "Don't even think about buying my Christmas presents at one of those sketchy online lingerie stores again."

God bless him for thinking that, after four kids and 20 years of marriage, I could still wear the same size I wore on our wedding night. But the lingerie industry has yet to learn that, as a woman's body shifts, so must the bows, lace and ruffles.

"No, I learned my lesson last year. I'm looking for good deals on golf clubs," he replied.

"Golf clubs? Don't you think you should be researching snow blowers or something a little more seasonal?"

"I can still get a few nice days in December to sneak out, and, by the time March rolls around, the snow will be melting, and it will be time to hit the course once more."

There we go again. Time is gone before we've even begun.

I feel like life is moving so quickly, and the harder I try to slow it down and keep it at bay, the faster it races toward me.

"I'm soooooo bored!" I used to cry to my mother when I was a young child.

"There's nothing to do around here!" I yelled as I flung my small body upside down off the couch, trying to see if looking at the world from a different perspective would make life more interesting. It didn't. At least not at that age.

But now that I've seen the world as a wife, a mother, a sister, a friend, a co-worker and a grown woman, life is very interesting.

Very interesting and moving much too quickly.
