LOIS OLSON BAKER
Lois Olson Baker, 82, of Portland, Maine, died Thursday, December 2, at Fallbrook Woods in Portland, where she had resided for the last three years. She was surrounded by her loving family.
She was born August 24, 1928, in Marlborough, New Hampshire, to A. Hjalmar and Marion (Ward) Olson. She graduated from the University of New Hampshire, where she met her husband, John (Jack) Robert Baker. The couple was married December 23, 1950.
Lois lived in Ohio for many years, where she taught fourth grade at University School in Shaker Heights and middle school math and science in the Beachwood school system. She also taught Sunday School at Shaffer Memorial United Methodist Church in Cleveland. After retiring from teaching, Lois worked in the business office at University School and volunteered as an IRS-authorized Enrolled Agent.
Lois loved animals, and she had several dogs and cats over her lifetime, including three rescue animals. She also loved nature and bird-watching, especially on Great Diamond Island, Maine, where she lived for seven years. Her other passions included camping, traveling, music, poetry, art, antiques, and spending time with her family. She had a beautiful, contagious smile.
She is survived by her daughter, Susan Baker-Kaplan (David Kaplan) of Portland, Maine; her son, John (Debbie) Baker of Mount Vernon, Ohio; grandchildren, Katie Baker of Silver Spring, Maryland and Sarah Baker of Mount Vernon, Ohio; and several cousins in New Hampshire and Florida.
She was preceded in death by her husband and parents.
A celebration of Lois’ life was held Sunday, December 5, at Fallbrook Woods. A burial service will be held in the spring in Hudson, New Hampshire.
