ARTHUR E. DAVIES
Arthur E. Davies passed away peacefully on Thursday, January 13, 2011. He was 89 years old. He is survived by his loving wife, Marjorie (Haffner) of 63 years; his son, Arthur Jr. and wife, Nina (Taylor); his son, Tom, and wife, Teri (Francis); and his eight grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Arthur and Cora; his sisters, Margaret and Arlene; and his brother, Dan.
Arthur was a graduate of Cleveland's John Adams High School, class of 1939, and was captain of the school's basketball team his junior and senior year. He joined the National Acme Company of Cleveland, Ohio, after graduation from high school and began working as a machinist. He left the company for several years early in his career when he volunteered to serve in the U.S. Navy during the later portion of WW II. During his time in the U.S. Navy, he served as a torpedo man aboard the submarine USS Manta in the Pacific Theatre. He returned to National Acme after an honorable discharge from the Navy in 1946, and spent the remainder of his career with the company. He rose to the position of Manager of Distribution and Sales when he retired in 1983, after a total of 44 years with the company. During his retirement the activities he enjoyed most were golf, barbecuing, travel, spending time with friends and family, and yard work on his riding lawn mower.
A private interment will be held. A memorial service to celebrate Arthur's life will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, January 22, 2011, at Valley Presbyterian Church in Bainbridge. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Valley Presbyterian Church, 17560 Chillicothe Rd., Chagrin Falls, OH. 44023, or Hospice of Care Corps, 831 South Street, Chardon, OH 44024.
