Work to begin around Route 422 interchange

Work to begin around Route 422 interchange

By JOAN DEMIRJIAN

Application of temporary pavement along Bainbridge and Chagrin roads will mark the official start of the Route 422 interchange work in Bainbridge.

The work is expected to begin June 20 but is weather dependent, and flaggers will be monitoring traffic, according to Amanda Lee, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Transportation.

There will be some daily lane closures on Chillicothe Road (Route 306), as they do the temporary pavement, she said.

"On June 27, phase one of the project by Karvo Paving Co. will start," Ms. Lee said.

It is expected to cost approximately $1,823,488 and will be completed in June 2012, she said. "Nothing will be closing or restricted over the winter."

Bainbridge Township Trustee Jeffrey Markley attended a preconstruction meeting held by ODOT District 12 on June 2 with the contractor.

Mr. Markley said he is hoping ODOT will make a presentation on the interchange work to Township Trustees. The public could be invited to learn about the work, he said.

He had not seen the plans until last week, he said. "Having a presentation would be helpful," Mr. Markley said.

Dale Schiavoni, ODOT District 12 transportation planning and programs administrator, said, if Bainbridge Trustees want a meeting with residents to unveil the plans, that can be arranged. District 12's construction office would coordinate that meeting, he said.

ODOT's plans show four lanes on Chagrin Road. For eastbound traffic, there will be a left-turn lane to head north on Chillicothe Road, a through lane headed east on Bainbridge Road and a right-turn-only lane south on Chillicothe Road to the Route 422 freeway entrances.

Westbound Bainbridge Road will have a left-turn-only lane to head south on Chillicothe Road, a straight lane to head west on Chagrin Road and a right-turn lane to go north on Chillicothe Road.

"Hopefully, the extra lanes will eliminate the long stacking of traffic at the lights," Mr. Markley said.

At the westbound Route 422 exit ramp, there will be two left-turn lanes and a right-turn lane.

Under the Route 422 overpass on Chillicothe Road, there will be two lanes headed south. Four lanes going north will include a right-turn only lane for turning onto Bainbridge Road. Two lanes will go straight, and one will turn left to the highway's westbound entrance ramp, Mr. Markley said.

Lights at the interchange will be timed differently and will have cameras for vehicle detection, Mr. Markley said. They will coordinate the light signals.

Geauga County will keep involved with the work being done on the county roads, because the county will be maintaining them when the project is completed, according to Geauga County Engineer Robert Phillips.
