'Great Brad' sets magic, theater camps

By JOAN DEMIRJIAN

Magic has captivated Brad Schreiber since he was a child. Now, he entertains others with magic and teaches children in classes and camps. Known as the Great Brad, he conducts workshops, classes and camps in the summer on magic as well as theater.

He has been entertaining for more than 20 years, appearing at festivals and on television.

Mr. Schreiber will be teaching a youth magic camp and a theater camp through Kenston Community Education Aug. 1-5 in Bainbridge. The theater camp is 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and the magic camp is 1 to 4 p.m.

For more information and to register, call Kenston Community Education at 440-543-2552.

The last day of the theater camp will include a variety show with singing, acting and dancing through skits and music numbers. The magic camp will feature a performance for parents by the campers who will use tricks they learned during the week.

With both camps, the performance experience helps build campers' self-confidence, he said. "It is an outlet for kids to perform. And in the magic camp, the kids can fool their parents," Mr. Schreiber said.

He said he started as a child taking part in plays and theater. "I was a real ham," Mr. Schreiber said. "I did anything in the arts."

He went on to earn his bachelor of arts degree in theater at Cleveland State University, and a teaching certificate in theater, English and speech from Baldwin Wallace College.

While still attending college, he taught afterschool classes and got into teaching. He did some serious plays at Cleveland State University and did some magic. That's when he saw the connection between theater and magic, he said.

Mr. Schreiber started doing more magic at festivals and fairs, and now teaches theater and magic and performs as a magician. His work for recreation departments has grown as well, he said.

He conducts a theater program at Hamlet Village in Chagrin Falls. "They are a remarkable age group to work with," Mr. Schreiber said.

"I'm an educator and magician and I do the camps in the summer. I love the arts, movies and musicals." He said his parents had an influence on his own interests.

"They were into the arts, and we went to a lot of plays and magician shows, too," Mr. Schreiber said.
