Finance director retiring

Solon Finance Director William Weber, who has been with the city since 1999 and has received various financial awards, is retiring.

Mr. Weber submitted an email Sunday to Mayor Susan A. Drucker and members of City Council, as well as members of the finance department, announcing that he is retiring from the position and that his last day is Aug. 12.

Mr. Weber, a lifelong resident of Solon, was hired by former Mayor Kevin C. Patton and began in the position Oct. 1, 1999.

"It's not a surprise," Mrs. Drucker said Tuesday. She said that she had discussions with Mr. Weber when she became mayor, and he indicated then that he may work a couple more years.

"He's finally made the decision," she said. "I'm sorry to see him go.

"His financial expertise served the city well for so many years, and he will be missed in that regard," Mrs. Drucker said.

Human Resource Director Thomas Cornhoff noted that Mr. Weber had a "very distinguished career" and "extensive expertise" in the area of government finances.

A certified public accountant, he had received numerous financial reporting awards from the auditor of state's office for preparing a comprehensive annual financial report.

Before taking the position in Solon, Mr. Weber served as finance director for Streetsboro and Highland Heights. He also worked with the state auditor's office and state department of taxation.

Because this was something the city knew would be coming, Mrs. Drucker said, "we've already been discussing what we would do and will be posting the position with professional organizations." She said she will begin conducting interviews for a replacement.

Mr. Cornhoff said the position will be posted later this week, and plans are to fill it sometime in September.

On a temporary basis, Assistant Finance Director Fred Wendel will run the department, Mrs. Drucker said. "This is a slow time now for the finance department." She said she will have enough time before the end of the year, when the department gets busier with close-outs, to find a replacement.

"We are going to absolutely miss Bill's financial expertise that he has offered to the city, but I wish him well in retirement," she said.

Mr. Weber will be using up his vacation time and would be in and out of the office, Mr. Cornhoff said. His annual compensation in the position currently is $98,934.
