GLORIA JEAN CROSS

Gloria Jean Cross (Nee Woodall), 83, of Louisville, KY. died on Tuesday, August 23, 2011, at her home with her family at her side. Mrs. Cross was born in Birmingham, Alabama, and graduated from Jefferson High School in San Antonio, Texas. She met her future husband, Gene L. Cross while attending Trinity University.

The couple later moved to Ohio where they raised their five children, Barbara Ann Cross, Lewis Paul Cross, Sheryl Lynn, Kelly Marie, Teresa Jean. The family resided in Russell Township in Geauga County. During these years, Mrs. Cross was elected in 1976 as the first woman trustee to serve Russell Township. She also was active in the Russell Women's Civic Club, Geauga County Republican Women's Club, other civic organizations in Geauga County and in the Cincinnati area where the couple lived before moving to Kentucky.

The couple retired to Louisville, KY, where Mrs. Cross won the 2000 Kentucky egg decorating contest at the Kentucky State Fair. She was invited to design and decorate the 2001 Kentucky State Easter Egg, which is now in the Presidential Library.

Mrs. Cross was a devoted and active member of the rosary markers guild at St. Martin of Tours and a director of Rosary International. Her life reflected public service, artistic and literary talent, and she had a tremendous infectious sense of humor.

Survivors include her husband, Gene L. Cross, of 64 years; son, Lewis and daughter-in-law, Paula Cross, of Willoughby; daughters, Barbara Ann Cross of Cincinnati, Kelly Cross of San Antonio, Texas, and Teresa and son-in-law, Tom Blocher, of Kitty Hawk, NC; sisters, Barbara Wright, Joan McIntosh; a brother, Ross Woodall; grandchildren, Rosalie Kelley, Daniel W. Bracken, Lewis and Mary Cross; and great-grandchild, W. Ezra Lee Riscar-Villarreal.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Rosalie N. Farmer and Julian LaFayette Woodall; siblings, Reggie Woodall and Nancy Gomez; a daughter, Sheryl L. Cross; and grandson, Gene Noel Villarreal.

A rosary service was held at the Arch L. Heady & Son Funeral Home, Louisville, KY.

A mass of Christian burial was held at St. Martin of Tours Church, Louisville, KY.

Interment was in Sunset Cemetery, San Antonio, Texas on Aug. 30, 2011. Friends may leave memories and sign the guestbook at www.archlheadywestport.com.
