SERAPIO “SCRAP” ZALBA
Serapio "Scrap" Zalba age 84 of Chagrin Falls, passed away Monday, August 29, 2011, at his residence. He was born July 16, 1927, in San Francisco, CA to Serapio and Ida (Arribas) Zalba.
Following his graduation from Mission High School, San Francisco, he joined the U.S. Navy and served during WWII. He received his undergraduate and graduate work from the University of California at Berkeley, and later his PH.D. from Case Western Reserve University, Cleveland.
He married Pat E. Pool July 20, 1954, in Los Altos, California. They moved to Shaker Heights in 1964 and on to Chagrin Falls in 1966.
Scrap was a Logger, Probation Parole Officer, College Professor, Author, Artist, Band Leader (Chagrin Falls Swing Ensemble), Founding member of the Chagrin Falls Business Community Partnership (now-Your Home Town Chagrin Falls), Umpire for 1860 Baseball, member of Babes of 1916 Baseball, member and past president of the Chagrin Falls Historical Society. But of everything, he felt his most important role was husband and father.
He is survived by his wife, Pat E. (Pool) Zalba; son, Anthony (Pamela) Zalba of Chagrin Falls; daughter, Elisa Zalba of Chagrin Falls; grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Robin Zalba of Ashtabula; brother-in-law, Larry Gray of CA; sister-in-law, Margaret Pool of CA, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his son, David; sister, Laura Gray; brother-in-laws, Calvin Pool and Dave (Rachael) Pool.
Graveside services will be held 2 PM Friday, September 2 at Evergreen Hill Cemetery, Chagrin Falls. Following the service, friends are welcome at the Chagrin Falls Historical Society from 3 to 7 PM for refreshments and visiting.
In lieu of flowers, Memorial Contributions may be made to the Chagrin Falls Historical Society, 21 Walnut Street, Chagrin Falls, OH 44022, or the Pantry Shelf of the Chagrin Falls Park Community Center, 7060 Woodland Avenue, Chagrin Falls, OH 44023.
