Solon posts second straight shutout win
By TONY LANGE
Solon (6-0, 1-0) remained undefeated Friday as the Comets posted their first Northeast Ohio Conference Valley Division victory, 17-0, against Medina (2-4, 0-1).
After a 0-0 first quarter, the Comets' gained a 7-0 lead with 3:45 left in the first half. Second-string quarterback Drew Barksdale found Ryan Schwenke on a 10-yard touchdown pass.
"It was a play-action play that we simulate running the ball outside and then we go the other way," head coach Jim McQuaide said. "We've used that play throughout the year. I think Nick Davidson, C.J. Hanna and Ryan Schwenke, all three of them have caught passes off plays like that while at fullback."
Coming into the game, the Comets thought that Medina's 2-3 record was very deceiving, McQuaide said.
"They have some really good players, a lot of whom are back from last year and they did a good job," he said. "Sometimes, when you don't get what you want, some of it is due to the other team. We were expecting a good game and I thought we got a good game from them."
It was the closest game all season for the Comets who led at halftime, 7-0. Medina held Solon to just 100 yards offense during that half.
"They played like a good team in the first half and we just needed to do a better job of what we were supposed to do," McQuaide said. "It's a long season and we're playing teams that also want to win and sometimes we lost a little sight of that."
Following a scoreless third quarter, Solon's defense put the Comets in good field position to set up a 43-yard field attempt that Alex Knight kicked through the uprights with 5:36 left in the game for a 10-0 lead. It was his first field goal since week two when he kicked a 12-yarder and 41-yarder.
George Berry scored the last touchdown of the game when he found the end zone on a 29-yard run with 2:17 left. He led the team with 56 yards on 14 carries in the game.
The Comets tallied 185 rushing yards and 79 passing on 60 snaps. Quarterback Patrick Kramer completed nine passes on 20 attempts for 62 yards.
Cory Stuart led the receiving effort with two catches for 23 yards.
Nick Davidson, yet again, led the Comets' defensive effort with 15 tackles and an interception. He has 56 total tackles for the season.
Solon held Medina to 146 yards on 55 snaps.
