Local runner named UAA athlete of week


Kenston High School graduate Taryn Surtees, of Bainbridge, was named University Athletic Association athlete of the week Nov. 18 after placing fifth overall in the NCAA Division III Midwest Regional cross-country championships in Rock Island, Ill.

The sophomore at Washington University in St. Louis paced the squad to a third-place team finish Nov. 15, earning an at-large berth in the NCAA Division III championships Nov. 22 in Hanover, Ind. Surtees completed the 6-kilometer course in 21:52.6 and was one of four Bears to garner All-Midwest Region honors.


FIRST-TEAM ALL-NCAC -- Kenston High School graduate Allie Cozzone, of Bainbridge, has been named first-team All-North Coast Athletic Conference in women's soccer.

A senior forward for Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, Ohio, she ranked second on the team this season in scoring with seven goals and four assists. She was a second-team all-conference pick in 2005, 2006 and 2007.

The Bishops finished the season with a 10-6-3 record and placed fifth in the NCAC.


VOLLEYBALL COMMITMENTS -- Solon High School seniors Kelsey Kuehner and Jessica Mueller have signed letters of intent to continue their volleyball careers in college.

Kuehner will play at Appalachian State University in Boone, N.C., an NCAA Division I school that plays in the Southern Conference.

Mueller will compete at Eastern Kentucky University in Richmond, a Division I school in that plays in the Ohio Valley Conference.


QUARTERBACK SCORES -- Sophomore quarterback Mike Fisher scored on a 23-yard run for the Ohio Wesleyan University football team Nov. 15 to tie the score at 7-7, but Allegheny College went on to win, 10-7, with a field goal in overtime. The Kenston High School graduate from Bainbridge rushed for 85 yards on 14 carries and completed six of 10 passes for 36 yards.

Senior linebacker Matt Weisman, of Solon and Gilmour Academy, had nine tackles, including one for a loss, in the Bishops' North Coast Athletic Conference road loss in Meadville, Pa.

OWU finished the season at 2-8 overall and 2-5 in the NCAC.

Although he played just seven games, Fisher was the team's leading passer, completing 58 of 99 tosses for 468 yards. He was second in rushing with 420 yards and three touchdowns in 85 carries. He also caught one pass for 27 yards.

Playing in six games, Weisman, had 36 tackles, including 16 solos and three for lost yardage.
