University’s 2nd, Solon 4th in huge meet
By TONY LANGE
The University School and Solon swim teams competed at the Ned Reeb Memorial Invite last Saturday at Ohio State University's 10-lane pool.
In one of the biggest, and perhaps the widest-ranging, Ohio high school swim meets, there were 48 boys teams and 45 girls teams at the event.
Led in top finishes by seniors Kevin Stang and Russell Stack, University School finished runner-up in the competition behind Upper Arlington, which outscored the Preppers 360-309.
In 2010, University School was able to edge Upper Arlington 312-303 for the title.
Last Saturday, Stack was able to place first in the 100-yard butterfly, 51.55, and third in the 100 freestyle, 47.32.
Stang took the title in the 200 individual medley, 1:55.04, and second in the 100 backstroke, 51.32.
Stack and Stand were able to team up with Gordo Wong and Kingsley Bowen in the 200 medley relay for first place.
University School's 400 free relay, which went undefeated last season, was disqualified.
Meanwhile, Solon junior Mark Lippert paced the Comets in his 500 and 200-yard freestyle swims as the Solon boys team placed fourth overall.
Lippert swam personal bests with his runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle, 4:45.75, and his fifth-place finish in the 200 freestyle, 1:47.31.
Solon head coach Mike Davidson said swimming has been an evolution for Lippert.
"When he came out of middle school, he really was probably a below-average swimmer, but the one thing that we saw that he had capability in was his aerobic ability," Davidson said. "He's just an aerobic machine and over the past couple of years, he's really developed into a very fine distance swimmer."
In the 500 free at the Ned Reeb Invite, Lippert placed between Upper Arlington duo Joey Long, 4:37.09, and Ryan Cutler, 4:50.70. Long finished third at the state swim meet last season as a sophomore, and Cutler finished 15th as a junior.
Lippert, an up-and-coming, state-caliber swimmer did not compete at the state swim championships last season.
For the Solon girls, sophomore Anna Wong was the top placer with her fifth-place finish in the 100 backstroke in 59.91.
Being under a minute at this point in the season is extremely satisfying, Davidson said.
"That's tremendous," he said. "She went a 1:00.00 last year at the end of the year at the district meet. But she's really blossoming into being a very confident athlete. And that was a really big breakthrough for her. I think now she sees that there is more room to grow."
Relay-wise for Solon, both the girls and boys teams are in experimentation mode, Davidson said.
The boys have some young-gun freshmen in Christopher Guo and Grant Pinchot, and the girls have a standout freshman, Katie Poduska, and sophomore, Allison Hoffman.
"With our team right now, not one relay out of the six are set in stone, so right now we're really doing our research in who's going to show different capabilities in different areas," Davidson said. "We have some young swimmers who came in, so we're just doing a lot of research."
