Hawks dunk records, competition in CVC

The Hawken School girls swim team dominated their opponents, while the boys team edged defending champion Chagrin Falls in last Saturday's Chagrin Valley Conference meet.

The Lady Hawks scored 499 points, beating runner-up Orange, 195 points, and third-place Kenston, 156 points, in the 12-team meet at Hawken's Holtrey Pool in Chester. Chagrin Falls placed fourth with 150 points, and West Geauga finished ninth with 47 points.

In the boys competition, the Hawks took back their CVC title with 280 points, besting the Chagrin Falls Tigers, who scored 238 points. Orange placed third with 159 points, Kenston was fourth with 155 points, and West Geauga finished fifth with 137 points.

Aurora, Perry, Cuyahoga Heights, Independence, Beachwood, Kirtland and Harvey also competed in the CVC championships.

The Lady Hawks won first place in all eight individual swimming events while setting four meet records.

Sarah Koucheki set meet records in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.25 and the 100 freestyle at 52.24. Carrie Bencic set a meet record in the 100 butterfly with a 57.71 and also won the 200 freestyle with a 1:53.72.

Morgan Cohara set a meet record in the 100 backstroke with a 57.65. Jordan Bitterman won the 500 freestyle with a 5:09.82. Lizzie Aronoff won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:07.88.

In the diving competition, Kenston's Madeline Sand, a sophomore, set a pool record with 359.9 points.

The Lady Hawks also were victorious in all three relays. Cominelli, Aronoff, Bencic and Caroline Vexler posted a time of 1:50.77 in winning the 200 medley relay. Mackenzie Harris, Vexler, Cohara and Koucheki swam a 1:39.72 in the 200 freestyle relay. And Koucheki, Bencic, Bitterman and Cohara won the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:36.13.

While Hawken School as a team won the boys competition, it did so with depth, winning only won two of the eight individual swimming events and one of the three relays.

Sophomores Elijah Spiro won the 100 breaststroke with a 1:02.42, and Alan Karinckhoff won the 200 freestyle with a 1:51.34 for the Hawks.

Spiro and Karinckhoff, joined by teammates Henry Senkfor and Nick Ranallo, set a meet record in the 400 freestyle relay with a 3:16.83.

The Chagrin Falls boys had two double-event winners with Austin Quinn, who set two meet records, and Davis Staley. Quinn's records came in the 200 individual medley with a 1:57.83 and the 500 freestyle with a 4:45.26. Staley won the 100 butterfly with a 53.15 and the 100 backstroke with a 54.54.

Quinn and Staley, joined by teammates Ben Vandertill and David Rann, set a meet record in the 200 medley relay with a 1:40.41.

Orange's Jack Nee also was a double-event winner and double record setter at the meet. He set meet records in the 50- and 100- freestyle races with times of 21.88 and 49.10.

Nee, joined by teammates D. Wang, D. Kim and W. Taylor, set a meet record in the 200 freestyle relay with a 1:31.35.

In the boys diving competition, Cuyahoga Heights' Brandon Rosolowski set a pool record with 427.55 points.
