Lady Comets win sectional swim title

The Solon girls swim team won a Division I sectional crown at Case Western Reserve University last Saturday.
The Lady Comets finished with 426 points beating runner-up Mayfield, 338 points, and the rest of the 16-team field. Kenston finished fifth with 218 points.
The top 50 individuals from the Akron North, Akron South, Lakewood and Mayfield sectionals, along with the top 20 relays, advanced to swim at the Division I Northeast District championships at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 17 at Cleveland State University.
During the girls sectional competition, the Lady Comets won the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:53.48 and 200 freestyle relay in 1:40.58, took second in the 400 freestyle relay, 3:46.29, and qualified at least one swimmer to districts in each of the eight individual events.
Leading the way for Lady Comets, Kelsey McRill finished first in the 50 freestyle, 25.04, and Anna Wong placed second in the 100 backstroke, 1:00.74.
McRill and Wong will only be swimming one individual event each at the district meet. Both opted out of swimming second individual events in order to take part in all three relays.
In the medley, they teamed with Dana Lautenschleger and Rebecca Hoffman. In the 200 freestyle relay, they teamed with Rebecca Hoffman and Allison Hoffman. And in the 400 freestyle relay, they teamed with Lautenschleger and Erin Finnerty.
Solon had an array of other finishes that qualified for the district meet:
Rebecca Hoffman placed third in the 50 free, 25.43, and fifth in the 100 fly, 1:03.28.
Katie Poduska placed third in the 100 freestyle, 57.48, and seventh in the 100 breaststroke, 1:14.53.
Lautenschleger placed fourth in the 100 backstroke, 1:03.18, and fifth in the 200 individual medley, 2:17.73.
Finnerty placed fourth in the 200 freestyle, 2:00.48, and eighth in the 500 freestyle, 5:28.31.
Alysia Swint placed fifth in the 50 freestyle, 26.10.
Allison Hoffman placed sixth in the 200 IM, 2:21.72.
Erin Sandridge placed ninth in the 200 IM, 2:23.23.
Aurelia Sweeney placed ninth in the 100 breaststroke, 1:14.87.
Shannon Finnerty placed 12th in the 500 freestyle, 5:37.85.
In diving, Sivan Mills won the competition with 441.45 points, Olivia Kreft placed third with 347.65 points, Chrissy Sharkus placed sixth with 277.25 points, and Hollie Mocsiran was 12th with 53.9 points.
Meanwhile, the Kenston Lady Bombers had four individuals qualify for the district championships:
Alanna Hanlon placed third in the 100 backstroke, 1:13.14, and sixth in the 50 freestyle, 26.10.
Emily Polk placed fourth in the 100 butterfly, 1:02.70, and eighth in the 100 breaststroke, 1:14.65
Kalya Korenowski placed eighth in the 200 IM, 2:23.20, and ninth in the 100 backstroke, 1:05.77.
Sophie Kocheff placed ninth in the 200 freestyle, 2:03.51, and ninth in the 500 freestyle, 5:34.48.
Halle D'Amicao placed 11th in the 200 IM, 2:24.49.
In diving, Madeline Sand placed second with 363.10 points.
There are four districts in Ohio high school swimming, and the top two finishers in each district automatically qualify for the state championships, while 16 at-large swimmers qualify on the basis of time.
MIGHT AS WELL LEAVE THE BOYS OUT OF THE GIRLS STORY:
while the boys team finished as runner-up at the Division I Mayfield Sectional meet.
Meanwhile, the Solon boys team scored 397 points and was only bested by Mayfield, which won the meet with 483 1/2 points. Kenston finished fourth with 229 points.
