Solon grad breaks college receiving mark


Solon High School graduate David Ravida became the all-time leading receiver for the football team at Washington & Jefferson College, of Washington, Pa., Nov. 29 with four catches in a 35-20 victory over Millsaps College in Jackson, Miss. The win advanced the Presidents to the NCAA Division III playoffs quarterfinals against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor last weekend in Belton, Texas.

A senior wideout, Ravida's four receptions gave him 188 for his career, eclipsing the previous school record of 186 set by Todd Fry from 1999 to 2002.

His play for Washington & Jefferson this season earned him second-team All-Presidents' Athletic Conference honors.

Through the second-round playoff game, Ravida had a team-leading 82 catches for 920 yards and eight touchdowns. He also is the team's main punt returner with 15 returns for 114 yards and has one kick return for 52 yards. He had 69 catches for 758 yards and eight TDs his junior year and 36 receptions for 461 yards and four TDs as a sophomore. He has a career total of 2,144 yards in receiving with 20 touchdowns.


ALL-BIG TEN HONOR -- Ohio State University outside hitter Katie Dull, a sophomore from Solon and Walsh Jesuit High School, has been named honorable mention All-Big Ten in volleyball.

She played in 19 of the 20 Big Ten matches this season, starting in 18, and averaged team highs of 4.51 points and 3.95 kills per set for the Buckeyes. She averaged 1.62 digs and 0.76 blocks per set in conference matches. Her points per set ranked fifth in the Big Ten, and she was fourth in kills per set.

Dull had double-figure kills in 15 Big Ten matches, including her last 12. She posted season highs of 22 kills and 24.5 points against Wisconsin and seven assist blocks at Minnesota. Her 16 kills against No. 1-ranked Penn State Nov. 28 were an opponent high against the Nittany Lions. She led Ohio State with 334 kills for the season.

The Buckeyes finished at 12-20 overall and 3-17 in the Big Ten.


FINDLAY SWIMMER -- Kenston High School senior Jillian Herbst signed a letter of intent last week to continue her swimming career next year at the University of Findlay.

Selected as the Kenston girls' swim team most valuable performer her sophomore and junior years, Herbst is a five-time state qualifier, including the 200-yard individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 medley relay and 400 freestyle relay as a sophomore and the medley relay as a freshman. She was All-Chagrin Valley Conference honorable mention the past two seasons.


ALL-TOURNAMENT GUARD -- Solon High School graduate Ashley Carney, a senior guard for the Notre Dame College women's basketball team, was named to the Comet Classic all-tournament team Nov. 30 at Olivet College in Olivet, Mich. She averaged 14.7 points per game and 6.7 assists per game during the week.
