Summertime swings into action

So, did you have a good time last weekend? Well, my little party animals and culture vultures, you should know the fun has just begun. It's summer, and there is something going on all the time around here.

Tomorrow is June 1, and right out of the box is the new Bell Street Artwalk from 5 to 9 p.m. at the studios, stores and galleries in the Valley Art Center neighborhood. June 1 also marks the opening of "A Night in Provence" at the Chagrin Valley Little Theatre.

There's more. Your Home Town Chagrin Falls Historic Home and Garden Tour begins June 1 also and continues June 2. It raises funds for village-booster programs by relying on the primal instinct we house freaks share -- the need to see inside the homes we have admired from the sidewalk. This time around there are six.

And don't forget the home-tour salad luncheon Friday at CVLT, thanks to the theater's women's committee.

The gang at Your Home Town won't have much time to recuperate, because Sunday (June 3) marks the opening of the fifth annual North Union Farmers Market on North Franklin Street from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. It continues each Sunday through Oct. 21.

Village resident Cinda Williams Chima, author of young adult contemporary fantasies, is up to bat next on the Hear Who's Here speakers lineup. It's at 7 p.m. June 6 at CVLT.

On deck June 7 is Chagrin Arts' annual benefit. This year's theme is musical chairs, based on the auction of 14 artist-decorated Adirondack chairs and salsa music by Noel Quintana's Latin Crew.

It's being held at a secret garden vineyard in Auburn. Be prepared to hear Chagrin Arts' lineup for this summer's Chautauqua in Chagrin events. Psssst ... it includes such blockbuster speakers as John Dean. Yes, that John Dean, counsel to the Nixon White House. Plus diplomat, activist and former Atlanta Mayor Andrew Young.

Seventh-inning stretch. On June 8 and 9 at 7:30 p.m., the Chagrin Falls Historical Society, and Chagrin Falls Performing Arts Academy present "Souls of the Village -- Chagrin Falls in the Civil War," based on letters between soldiers and their families. Written and directed by Dusten Welch and Julia Kolibab, the performance stars members of the academy's acting ensemble. Theatrical guru Tom Fulton is producer.

There's even more. June 9 and 10 in Riverside Park is Valley Art Center's Art by the Falls. Find art, fine crafts, music and food from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

Last but never least is the annual summer classic Concerts in the Park series thanks to the Chagrin Valley Chamber of Commerce. The music begins June 14 with Cleveland "skinny boy" Alex Bevan, followed on June 21 by the folk- rock JMiller Band and on June 28 with the big-band stylings of the Dan Zola Orchestra. Triangle Park is the place, and 7 p.m. is the time each Thursday straight through Aug. 9.

That's just some of what's going on in these 2 square miles known as Chagrin Falls. So get ready, set, get out there and enjoy your socks off, because, before you can say, "Bottom of the ninth," the stores will be stocking school shoes and backpacks, and you know what that means.
