Judge orders Lane moved to county jail
By JOSEPH KOZIOL JR.
A Geauga County Common Pleas Court Judge, overseeing the trial of accused school shooter Thomas Lane III, has ordered the suspect be transferred to the Geauga County Safety Center.
Judge David Fuhry issued the order Sept. 7, saying the move from the Portage-Geauga Detention Center to the county jail will facilitate his attendance at upcoming court hearings. Mr. Fuhry also noted that Mr. Lane turned 18 on Sept. 19 and should be in a facility designed to house adults.
The order calls for Mr. Lane to be transferred Monday unless attorneys representing him can show cause why the transfer should not take place.
Mr. Lane has been held at the juvenile detention center since the Feb. 27 shootings in the Chardon High School cafeteria that killed three and wounded three others.
Mr. Fuhry this week deferred a defense motion to move the trial from Geauga County. He ruled that the court first must to seat a jury before determining whether a jury pool in Geauga has been tainted by the extensive publicity surrounding the case and the near universal emotional outpouring from the public following the shootings. Prosecutors argued that it would be premature to move the trial.
Mr. Lane’s attorneys are expected to enter a plea of not guilty by reason of insanity at an Oct. 1 hearing before Mr. Fuhry.
