Locked drawer stops robbery

CHAGRIN FALLS – Police are investigating an attempted robbery Saturday of the Huntington Bank branch at 98 N. Main St.
According to a witness, the would-be robber walked into the bank at about 3:40 p.m., approached the counter and demanded cash from the customer service representative who was filling in for the teller, who had locked her cash drawer and taken the key with her to the restroom.
The suspect did not display a weapon, but reportedly said, “Stop stalling and give me the money,” according to Detective Timothy Reed.
When he was informed the drawer was locked, the male turned and walked out of the bank. As he left, the bank security camera caught him pulling off a stocking, which he used to cover his head and face.
Police searched the area, but could not locate the subject, who was last seen walking east through the parking lot between the bank and Rick’s Café.
The suspect is described as in his late 30s or early 40s with collar-length brown hair, 5 feet, 9 inches tall and 225 pounds. He was wearing a Cleveland Browns baseball cap, a blue or a grey sport coat, a checkered shirt, blue jeans and white tennis shoes.
If anyone recognizes the suspect, they are asked to call police at 440-247-7321.
The attempted robbery marks the second in Chagrin Falls in the past six weeks. At 1:50 a.m. Aug. 12, police were called to the BP gas station to take a report from a male clerk who said he had been robbed by a male “brandishing a black hand gun.”
There were no injuries. A gun was found later in the morning in the bushes near South Main and Bellview Street. The robbery remains under investigation as police are withholding details pending its conclusion.
