Sleepless night worth writing about

Maybe it was the late night out or that afternoon cup of coffee, but whatever "it" was, it caused one sleepless night and a brain that just would not chill. As I lay there in the dark silence, ideas and thoughts crossed my mind, and they seemed profound and interesting at the time.

Many writing instructors advise their students to keep paper and pen by their beds so they can jot down their dreams, thoughts and impressions. The theory is that it is in our reverie that we possess a clarity, a purity of thought so profound that writers will be driven to their typewriters (it was a long time ago), where they will produce the great American novel.

So I found pad and pencil and put it on the bedside table then drifted off to sleep, waking only momentarily to jot down my midnight impressions.

The pad and pen were still in my hand when I awoke. Anticipation became disappointment. The entries started out OK, but they became a trail of illegible words and half sentences. I managed to decipher the sleep writing and have tried to make full sentences so you too can share. Please read on:

Barack Obama should get his haircuts at a normal barbershop, and his visits should be unannounced. Everyone knows barbershops, like beauty shops, are the best places to gauge the temperature of the people ...

What's with these fingerless gloves? Isn't it your fingers that get the coldest first?

I have to remember to tell readers that Dave Griffiths has just celebrated his 50th year practicing law in downtown Chagrin Falls and how his firm is the longest lived in the village ... got to remember, remember, remember.

Sure hope "the new Dink's, Fresh Start Diner, is a big success ... We need a place like that ... Wonder if they will bring back the rice pudding ... Yummy.

That's funny about the Ben & Jerry's new name for its butter pecan ice ... "Yes Pecan" in honor of the new president ... yes, we can eat some too ... Sweet, sweet, sweet ... Sad.

Gorant's candy and card shop is going out of business ... another big toothless smile ... Tonic Home gone and Cottonwood too ... the village is losing its retail teeth ... but Susan Harris has been telling people the former Play home theater store on North Franklin Street has been rented ... But to whom? ... Wish Buckeye Road's Lucy's Sweet Surrender would come here ...

Still can't believe we lost a Johnny's restaurant to the "preservation" of a forgotten 10 feet of cement slab in Bell Street Park ... foolish ... where are the park preservationists now that a part of River Run Park has been designated grounds for the might-be police station ... Guess cement and a drain pipe mean more than the dog park and parking lot at River Run ... Parks people should learn to pick their fights. That was not one ...

Wonder if the economy has affected the Windsor Hospital development ... and the West Orange Street condos ... have to remember to ask ...

Damn, damn, damn ... last week's column was supposed to end with the words "jackhammer lobby," not "jackhammer hammer" ... wonder if I put it at the end of my next column if it would make any difference ... probably not ... Oh, well ... yawn.
